Campfire Dorado 2020

I sent him a PM asking about the DAP or other device he uses for IEM reviews.
Fair enough, just be careful about opening a can of worms you may not want to. And always remember that while he may be a great resource for reviews in this hobby, he is just one person with his own opinions, and his opinions are not gospel.

If you are trying to make a purchase decision, nothing crin says is likely going to be positive about it. He has made his opinions clear and I'm not sure his choice of playback device would alter that in any way.

In his review of the IER-Z1R he mentioned he listens to music off his iPhone (Apple dongle FTW) and the ifi Micro iDSD. If I remember correctly.

If he answers my PM, I will share the info with Rock and leave it up to him weather to post it. After all, it's Rock's thread.

Well this thread specifically isn't, it's just the dorado thread. Share away, just don't do it if your goal is to try and invalidate his opinions in any way. His opinions are still totally valid even if negative, and he's not the only one who feels that way.

I personally also didn't agree with what he said, but I always just try to remember that not everyone likes what I do, and that's totally fine by me. If everyone liked the same things this would be a really boring forum.

I wouldn't worry about sharing it, as it's already public! I believe that Crin uses an iBasso DX160 as his DAP.

But even as a “transducer specialist” reviewer, an important question still needs to be asked: what will be the consistent source(s) that will used as a reference for all future reviews on In-Ear Fidelity? Currently there are three:
  • The Digitial Audio Player reference: the iBasso DX160
  • The one true God Acceptable Minimum: the Apple dongle (at least for IEMs)
  • The Emergency Transportable Powerhouse: iFi iDSD Micro Black Label

As a note of interest, I have a DX160 as well. It's what I would consider to be a leaner, brighter source. However, I also paired the Dorado with an A&K SP1000M (darker, more relaxed tonality) and came away with the same impressions. I can't speak for Crin, but personally, I don't think the source (or any amount of power) would have influenced my overall thoughts on the Dorado 2020.

I had a DX160 , and honestly I couldn't stand it. Sounded very unnatural to me. YMMV
A lot of times sources can have a great impact on an IEM. I think many underestimate this, I did too, I have an M15 and after getting the M8 I realized that my IEMs had more to give. Sometimes it's not about mere specs there's more to it I think.

whats everyones fav tips?
seen a few people say spiral dots ++
anyone tried spinfits?
I like the spiral dot ++ for home. Great seal and comfort. For work I like the Symbio F foams. I wear these under earmuffs and I find they are a bit more secure and don’t seem to attenuate the highs. They are super comfortable too. I think I switch to the spiral dots out of superstition as much as anything else.. ha..

A DX 160 would be a decent DAP to use for reviews. It is middle of the road like probably most of this forum's members. As we all should know, we do not all hear the same. I am a great example of this being 73 and having one ear that does not hear as good as the other. As I have said before, Daps are 1/3 of the IEM system. Most of us here seem to like the M8, but not everyone can afford what we here like.

My PW cable for my Dorado arrived today. I installed Senda Tips on Dorado 2020, and hooked it up to my break in system for a week of continuous Tidal. It should be cooked by next Tuesday evening. As soon as I receive my 4.4 socket from Andrew, I will switch it over to the M8.

One of the reason's why I respect Precogvision's reviews/impressions. He uses the DX160 for most of his reviews. It's nice to have a TOTL DAP, but it isn't really necessary for critical listening (as a reviewer)/the enjoyment of IEMs. With his affiliation w/headphones.com I'm sure he has access to TOTL gear.

Just could not stand it. After a bit more than an hour of breakin, I decided to listen to them to make sure the PW cable was not too much silver for them. Nope, Just right. Bass is coming along and is very controlled, but lots of bass when called for. Still needs time to smooth out the rest of it. Please this was not on my M8. Amp is Drop THX AAA 789 which is very reference, and almost boring .

Honestly, best not to even worry about it. He's just one guy on the internet who, while he has a big following, is just sharing his own subjective opinions.

Best bet is always try for yourself, and if you can't, seek out more than just one opinion, preferably from people you know share similar preferences to you.

And always trust your own ears. And if someone else doesn't agree, it doesn't matter.
The other thing I always value when reading a review is what music did the reviewer listen to when forming their opinions?

Crinacle doesn't mention this for any individual review/impression, but you can get an idea here:
https://crinacle.com/2020/05/09/the-tracks-of-an-audio-critic-a-personal-musical-journey/

While I appreciate the work Crinacle does for this hobby, he lost me at Britney Spears. 😉
