Wow this thread's like, "Rizumu's thread" or something. Actually I was pretty bored and depressed until about a week or so ago. I know what it's like to be in a slump. I couldn't bring myself to do **** or feel good or happy about anything. Thankfully my depression cleared up like it usually does after awhile. Sort of. Blah.

I tend to find that it's all about the moderation. Throw yourself headlong into anything, and no matter how good it is, after a while you get burned out. It's like eating hamburgers every day. They taste good, but after the 4th week you just can't swallow it. The secret is to have something to look forward to. I can't tell you what that is, but who knows. Maybe take a short weekend trip to escape from your seemingly dreary mundane life. Do something wild like skydiving or hanggliding. Streak naked through Sproul Plaza. Connect wires to a lantern battery and spark your nipples...

The secret damn well is having something to look forward to, something to get you through the day. You need a handhold, something to hang on to when everything else goes down the tubes. For me this is music. Some days I've felt like that if not for music there wouldn't be anything worth sticking around for.

Whenever I'm feeling bored with music, it's 99% of the time the music and not the gear. Find some new music; once you find something that really clicks, you can be listening through streetstyles and still be happy. I'm not kidding. I don't consider myself an audiophile because while I enjoy good sound, I don't base what I listen to on the quality of a recording or not listen at all if I only have low-fi sources available. Music first, gear second, and that's how it's always going to be.

And although I'm still a little bored, I've been happy this week. I finished my summer class and got the A I was aiming for, and have been kicking back listening to just SR60's through my soundcard. Nothing fancy, but the music is the point. You never know when you'll run into your new favorite band on accident, just hang in there.

Oh and SteeleBlayde, don't worry, Feast for Crows should come out someday

Rizumu, i think you hit the nail on the head.

it is the hunt, the quest for that next item to purchase that seems to give me pleasure/keep me interested. Whether it be computers or headphones, searching for that next purchase keeps my mind busy/occupied/entertained. ...oh yeah, its called upgraditis.

but now that I'm giving up on moving upwards with headphones, being unable to take the big leap forward that I would like (Omega IIs

), my interest level has died down, and headfi is really offering little to me other than the Music and Lounge forums.

I would like to rediscover the wonder, the interest, i just wonder how. I hardly ever use my phones at home....its been weeks? months more like it....now, if i could use my EAR+ and RS-1s at work...mmmmmmmm

so, to not be bored, maybe i need to find that next thing to pursue.

Yes. New music. Sometimes I get tired of listening to the words, because gosh darnit, songs these days are so mindlessly repetitive and the lyrical content often leave much to be desired. Thus I have turned to listening to music of which I absolutely cannot understand, because then it's ALL about the music right? The universal language... My 2 favorite languages currently are Spanish and Japanese.

Spanish: Because for some reason, take any singer who sings in both Spanish and English, and their Spanish songs are a LOT better. I.e. Marc Anthony (Dimelo vs. I need to know, and the classic No me Ames [salsa version] with J.Lo), Shakira (Ojos Asi vs. Eyes like yours, Suerte vs. wherever, whenever, estoy aqui), even Christina Aguilera.

Japanese: Because their rock is nice. B'z has been around for a while and has a lot of good songs, Chihiro Onitsuka has a beautiful voice, BoA is good, and even Jpop singers like Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru, Minmi are good. My favorite japanese song currently is Bump of Chicken - Sailing Day. I love the drummer's drumming.. And Japanese anime has a lot of good songs too.

And the best part: even if the lyrics are crap, who cares cuz the music sounds good!

If you like more techno kinda music you can always check out Korean stuff like Lee Jung Hyun and BoA too.

I agree that that's what has kept me in the game for the past 2 years. But now that the system is pretty much completed, there's nothing else to look forward to.

HAH! You hit it right on the head! Waiting is the worst part!! Couldnt he hurry up already?! On the mention of series that I'm still waiting for *sigh*:

Books 4 to 6 in Wayfarer's Redemption by Sara Douglass
Wheel of Time - Rob Jordan (He better finish this stupid thing soon...)
Sword of Truth Series - Terry Goodkind (I started it, I have to finish it)
Morgawr - Voyage of Jerle Shannara - Terry Brooks (this better come out soon too!)

Grrrrr...all this waiting with nothing to read just makes me mad.

Usually being tired, blah, exhausted and without energy to do anything is a sign of stress. If you don't deal with that stress it can build and become depression. Exercise helps out allot with stress. You can be very surprised after doing your usual workout, or just getting back into whatever you do a little bit at a time.

Funny you mention this, I've been checking out a lot more Japanese music lately. Japanese is probably my favorite language too...well, besides English but that's because I'm fluent in it. There's so much more great music out there when you expand your horizons and break the language barrier it's ridiculous. I'm more rock than pop though. My previous obsession was Shiina Ringo, now it's Malice Mizer. Damn do they rock. I need to check out Gackt's albums now since he left and I like him better than Klaha.

Let me add too that if you're learning a language, short of living in the country, only by immersing yourself in it are you really going to master it. Anime and Japanese music have really kept my skills sharp since my last Japanese class ended several years ago. I plan to take more though. Finding you understand the lyrics if only a little bit even is rather cool. The songs take on so much more meaning too if you know what they're saying and the ideas behind them...I think I'm rambling.

SteeleBlayde: LOL, I just had a feeling, y'know? I've had the new Harry Potter to occupy me up until now but I just stayed up until 4 AM last night and finished. What to do now...

Exercise does help improve my attitude a lot. I'm much more pleasant after a good workout. If I only wasn't so lazy and got out and did it more

The problem is when I'm feeling depressed I feel that much less like doing anything than normal, so it's hard...It's something I need to work on though.

Bored of life? Everyone has been there. But, I just don't understand why everyone is so quick to label it depression and call it a bad thing. People always think that just because something doesn't feel good that it isn't real. We are advertised happiness every which way we look, and when we aren't feeling so good, the constant bombardment of fake happiness makes us feel outcast and drives us deeper into the "depression". So what's the answer? Happiness advertisers would say, "Buy/believe/take this and you will be happy." People trying to console you will say: stay active, find new things to do, don't think about it(it kinda helps). I say, revel in this feeling, bathe in it, drink it, breathe it. Use it to find some truth. Its the only thing that matters.

oh and IMHO, Pills will never cure anything. I think they're just another sell from a happiness advertiser/dealer. You can't know true happiness without knowing true sadness. You can't know enjoyment without boredom. yin and yang, man. Both are true, but not without the other.

Bored of music?
1. find new types of music.
2. get a less analytical system.

Some good points SD. Some others I thought of and are worth rementioning:

3. eat out
4. see a good movie
5. read a good book
6. work out
7. see/call/meet/contact one of your family
8. network (head-fi'ng is actually a part of this)

nanahachi, if you're in reasonable physical shape and able to follow simple instructions, I'd suggest at least exploring the possibility of making a first-time tandem skydive (if you haven't already).

USPA.org - United States Parachute Association (USPA):
http://www.uspa.org/

The northern California area has a number of professional and well-regarded USPA Group Member drop zones, including SkyDance SkyDiving at the Yolo County Airport.

I feel one exciting feature of making a first jump is the special role favorite music (and music in general) takes on for a period of time post-jump.

There must be other activities that can induce a similar sense of "music appreciation", but I really can't think of a better "bang for the buck" ATM, LOL.

wow, synchronicity.

i wanted to say "jump out of a plane" but didn't. Mostly because it seems exciting and because I've been interested in doing it for a while.

TravelLite,
I'm not sure how different it is in different places, but generally you have to jump three times with the parachute pulled right when you leave the plane, before getting to actually skydive by yourself? I also thought of doing tandem, but i want to jump alone some day.

Plan B: Hike out somewhere remote for a weekend. Find somewhere quiet, or with running water. Bring ramen and a book. Chill out, don't worry or even think about things.

I really like those ideas. Thanks

PS If someone starts to think that they might be clinically depressed, please go see your doctor. It's no big deal, but if they can't help, they can refer you to someone who can. Just my experience. Thanks and take care everybody.
