Blue Hawaii PCB Group Buy - Heads Up

Can we get the files for the BHSE? I have no idea on the status of that design.

The BHSE design is a work from Headamp Electronics and is a version of Dr Gilmores circuit by Mr Wilson. It would be against his business interests to start dispensing those boards given the years of work that have gone into the product.

As for BH boards. If they're absolute certain of functionality (IE outside of Spritzers warnings by whatever good means) I'd be in.

Hmmm, the Blue Hawaii Amps that were sold by Headamp didn't blow up down the road did they? I did not know that.

But were the PCBs done with Dr. Gilmore's board files, or did Justin do his own?

And no, you could not expect to get the BHSE files as this is a current product.

Let's let that mystery continue, shall we?

Looks like you're here to help...

Help protect a commercial entities intellectual property perhaps.

No one has snatched up any of those $6 devices yet.. Only need 24 of them per amplifier and two per power supply. That makes two whole amplifiers with the available stock.

Oh, and watch out for fakes...

Well first, why are you in charge of protecting someone elses commercial venture?

Second, this was made "Open Source" DIY by KG. There are no intellectual property rights being violated here. Read the earlier post by Erik, he talked about getting the most accurate files from Dr. Gilmore.

Third, Headamp doesn't make this product anymore, it has been deprecated.

Fourth, Headamp sells the boards for some of their current commercial High End products, ie the current solicitation for KGSS boards, which is a current product. If Headamp wanted to sell these boards, I'm sure we would all Love that.

Fifth, complaining about forum-commercialism in one venue and "protecting" it in another is hypocritical.

Like I said, I guess you're here to help...

If you don't want to help, that's ok. But why keep doing this?

Since some of the engineering work was done by Justin @ Headamp, it wiill be interesting to hear Dr Gilmore's response before anyone gets too excited.

MY BOM is available to all as a starting point (it is quite dated), as I have already shared it with some in the thread, but, sourcing will be quite a challenge.

There were failures with the board files that can be worked around. So, if 3 people intimately familiar with the BH boards, and building them, indicate there are issues, best to believe. Now, what is important is that it really will be up to Justin whether he wants to disclose this.

Regardless, IFF this project goes forward, to expect Justin to assist is, well, pretty unreasonable, as there is nothing in it for him. Know also I won't be able to help, as, well, I'm not capable... beyond sourcing parts, stuffing boards, and sharing the experience of living with the BH.

Hi AL,

All good points. Just curious, after looking over your build, where did you get your boards? Were they for sale at one point? I thought they might have been since a few folks have uncompleted project boards.

I can't swing a BHSE, just no way, no how! I would gladly buy some of these from Headamp, like he has offered with the KGSS boards. They're not for sale though, thus not an option. I've asked.

I was given the board files by KG for a one off, (probably as a perverse joke, but with the proviso that they not be shared. So, to my knowlege, these boards have never been available for sale.

There is one DIYer, Kerry in NY, that made his own board files, so, it can be done. There are also derivatives as well (see the Vulcan in my sig), which have current production parts, but use 6s4a not el34/6ca7.

Now, one other thing for everyone to remember is the XPM (Extreme Poor Man's Stat Amp), which we are building gen2 of now in SS, then tube (again, 6s4a based), which may be just a month away. So, options are just about here, which will make a FAR better interim project than the BH. Also remember, to really make the BH go crazy is a quad of Mullard xf2, which MUST be balanced / matched, so that is at least $300 just for tubes.

So, the challenges as I see them for a project like this:

1) KG and Justin granting permission
2) Sourcing 2sk389 and 2sc3676
3) Toroids - Vic Magnetics is gone for this purpose, so the lead time from SumR or Electraprint is about 2 months, at least. I have a spec SumR can build @ ~ $150 each
4) the heatsinking and casing is really complex

Maybe if ya'll are nice to Marc, he'll share the Vulcan with it's Janus power supply.
