Biggest Disappointment Headphone
Aug 3, 2017 at 8:06 PM Post #286 of 401
With going a bit mad over the past year - over 20 pairs of 'phones, I really have been fortunate as all I can say is kinda the Focal Spirit Classic - not because it's disappointing per se, but because I so, so much prefer the Focal Spirit Pro! But the Classic is lots of fun as an out 'n about 'phone.

If you heard the Spirit Classic with a Chord Mojo you might change your mind. The Classic is for Musical enjoyment the Pro more for analysis?!?

Sublime perfection. Surprisingly open sound, dynamic and tonally perfect. (excuse the hyperbole)The best I've had/ heard. Shame they (the headband 3 times) have a life span of 6 months. They'd be 'end games' for me (edit Mojo/Spirit Classic)

Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. There are some exceptions like the HD650 (you get way more than you pay for) and nordost cables (you get way less than you pay for).. But a lot of people, especially reddit and [Mod edit]other forums[/Mod edit] it seems only care about how flat the frequency response is. All else is out the window. And thats why you got people hooking up SHP9500s to 300$ amps thinking they got an endgame rig.

You think the 650 is some sort of end game? I personally disagree on your Nordost opinion but we can't all share the same opinion. That would be a bore now wouldn't it

Definitely not an endgame headphone, but at the going price of $315 for the HD650 and $200 for the HD6XX, they are a killer value, as long as you have the right gear to drive them well.

The HD650 can be end game for many people. If you feel a nordost cable gives you more sound for your money than a HD650 then feel free to believe that.

'Endgame' is when you find something that truly satisfies you. When you can't imagine anything sounds much better even though you know there probably is, at many times the price. It's about contentment, knowing when to call it a day and enjoy what you have and most importantly of all enjoying the music you love.

Thanks for allowing my opinion to exist! :beyersmile:We've measured them several times and so far they perform as promised. There are lots of cables you guys mention that when tested just don't measure up as it were.

I had a beats solo 2 wireless, and it wasn't bad. It was my only BT headset, and thought it was neat to walk around without a cord. I could go all around my house and continue to hear audio from my phone or computer.

But I thought it was overpriced so I didn't keep it.

But the solo 2 was rated higher than the previous models and even Tyll thought they were pretty decent.

Yeah, read the old classifieds here for the definitve review of the solo 2 titled "Tyll you are dead to me" Bought a pair without cable at the local thrift shop for 4.99 and overpaid at that. Rivaled only by the URbeats I found at a bus stop and I consider the act of picking them up off the ground to be overpaying as well.

All bass no imaging the headworn equivalent of the kicker sub lowrider setup. I do suppose they drown out the sound of a Glock in a drive by so the market they serve must love em.

lol! i gotta find that review. You didn't think it was worth 5 bucks? Lol I'd say it was at least comfortable and cool technology. Maybe cuz I listen to electronic, the bass boost was acceptable. That's the only Beats I've tried and I wouldn't buy it cuz overpriced a lot. I also thought they looked dumb on me for some reason.

There is a massive divide in the community, and its people who enjoy bass (the electronic type) vs people who does not.

To be fair the build quality is exceptional. Hifiman and Focal should take note. The drivers and tuning leave you dead cold. Like having a subwoofer on your skull . I kept them around until i can find decent drivers to transplant into them as the ergo makes for a potentially great portable headphone.

If you were the kid who when you got your first hand me down reciever you turned the treble control all the way down and the bass control all the way up, Beats are definitely for you.

Not a budget or quality issue.

Didn't like the sound.

Focal Utopia-
Expected more with all the hype out there.
Small soundstage, edgy treble, bass light.
You see these up for sale everywhere, now I know why.

Fostex 900-
V shaped sound signature, offensive treble, ouch!

Sony MDR-Z1R-
Bass is bloated, zingy treble. Thick sounding? Hard to describe.

Just my .02 worth. YMMV.

I tried all three of these ^
Owned the Focal Utopia several weeks, and tried the Sony's and Fostex several days.
I totally agree with CorvetteGarage on their sonic weaknesses.
Sold all three.

One thing I've figured out over the years. "It's not so much about accuracy but how we want our headphones to sound". I agree about the TH-900's V shaped sound signature but not at all about it's treble being offensive. Never owned the MDR-Z1R but I did waste some time with the MDR- Z7 and agree with Corvette Garage on the Sony house sound.

I will pass on the Utopia comments due to the fact that my findings are totally the opposite.
