Beyerdynamic T5 (3rd Generation)

if you were comparing the size of the pads of the T5.2 with another beyer (new or old), which one is of similar size?

I'd had a DT880 many years ago (only lost it as our office got broken into!) and I found the size of those pads and ear opening sufficient for my ears. Thoughts?

Thanks again!

See attached pics comparing my T5.2 with DT800 premium 600 ohms.

The black pads are Beyer 990 pads, not the stock grey that came with it. The blacks are thicker but the diameter is the same.

It's not super obvious visually, but the 5.2 ia slightly smaller diameter. I'd guess the 880 is similar to the 1990 diameter wise, but never checked.

to those with both 5.2 and 5.3 (or have listened to both extensively), can you please provide feedback on the sonic difference? how about fit and comfort?

Thank you.

Gen 3 has less ear response gain, has a flatter more monitor like response. Very laid back but mid detail certainly less forward than Gen 2.

Bass response very comparable between two as is comfort for me.

I'd give the nod myself to gen 3 slightly, but not due to fault or deficiency in gen 2, just preference.

Gen 2 definitely looks better.

Thanks Brett. I just found out Beyer is having a sale for both T1. 3 and T5.3

T1 should be semi-opened and T5 is closed.
With the third gen they switched from semi-open to open, although there seems not to be much difference between the new and older models regarding damping…

Honestly all open Beyers could be argued to be on the semi-open side. I don't think they've ever made a wide open dynamic before.
All open Beyerdynamic models I had were definitely on that side of things, yes. Only exception being the old T90 maybe, but none were so loud on the outside as e.g. the K812.

I never took one of the apart, but I once read about the backside of the T1 which was described as being rather closed. Now we only need someone who is willing to take a new T1 apart

I’m not familiar with the T90 personally

Oh I’ve already taken apart the the T1.2 and the T1.3. They’re similar inside except the T1.2 had a metal mesh on the venting part of the earcup. The T1.3 has foam. Outside grill is different of course. Other differences is of course the driver cover on the T1.3 and also the T1.3 (T5.3 has this too) has the pad mounting ring found on the DT 1770/1990 and Amiron Home. Whereas the T1.2 ring to keep the driver in is more like the DT 880, etc. and also has a rubber washer on it for vibration control whereas the T1.3 uses to foam/fabric driver cover for this. You can swap these rings between the two. Also found the T1.3 has a stronger clamp than the T1.2 but headband have the same basic design with some cosmetic differences.

One of the things I don't understand is why the T1 has a screw end for 6.3mm with its cable while the T5 does not, and the supplied 6.3mm adapter just rotates freely on top of the 3.5mm tip... Sometimes even causing brief cut out with the sound.

Get a different adapter, they are cheap and a swap should fix the cut outs.

The reason they are different cords (T1 is also longer) is that for prior gens the T1 was the 'home' unit and the T5 had a 'p' on the end for portable... The T5's shorter 3.5 mmm terminated cable was meant for mobile whereas the T1 was for home system.

With gen3 both are portably driven now (T5.2 drivers in both) so the T1's legacy cable doesn't make as much sense.

You can always by 3rd party cables too, the 3.5 mm TS termination Beyer uses on its audiophile line are widely available.
