Beyerdynamic T1 3rd Gen out now

John, what do you think of the Mysphere? Is it a pain to get the adjustment right? (I've never heard it-- just starting to learn about it).
Great sound - the midrange is simply magic, the treble excellent. The bass is best with type B ear cushions and adequate. Soundstaging is wonderful. Dynamics appear to be unfettered. Build quality is unbelievable. Comfort is behind my other headphones, but I do have a pumpkin head. Comfort is literally the only con. They are expensive, but well worth it. I never heard an AKG K1000, but it sounds like these are the phone where all the inadequacies were ironed out. Buy one now.

Not attacking your preferences. It's just not a thing for the "majority of solid state", including the O2.
I have always thought of my O2+ODAC as being a 'wire with gain' type amplifier. Is this not the case ? There are of course many warm solid state amplifiers on the market.

Heh..I just thought of something perplexingly clever. The folks over at Beyerdynamic are brilliant! What Beyer effectively is doing with this new iteration of the T1 is basically breathing new life into all of the disheartened Nighthawk owners who’ve felt immensely saddened by the discontinuation of their favourite headphone. Hell they can’t even buy pads for it anymore and the shape of the cups is so ‘leaf-like’ strange that locating substitutes that doesn’t mess with the sound is nigh on impossible.
The biggest problem the Hawk owners had up until this point was however finding a succesor...in case of fire/children/whathaveyou...because no other headphone sounded even remotely close to it..not even slightly. Well good news to you guys and gals: the T1 is the answer to all your prayers AND it comes with cups you’ll be able to find replacement pads for way after it’s out of production:wink:
Sounds terrible 😔. Nighthawk - love it or hate it. Even the NightOwl was too dark for me.

Won't that produce a large bass hump. Shouldn't the output impedance be ideally less than 4Ω for this.
In many cases the amp does cause a large bass hump in headphones, doesn't seem to on the T1.3 though. The 1/8th rule is a general guideline for impedance matching, but exceptions and oddities do exist.

That also depends on the impedance curve of the headphone: if it has rather wild swings (which especially many multi-BA in-ears show) having a high amp output impedance will change the sound because the voltage divider between OI and load then depends on frequency. If the headphone has a rather linear impdedance curve, the changes to its sound will be less or even negligible even when not adhering to 1:8 heuristics, which is generally on the safe side for not altering the sound.

Beyerdynamic always tuned their headphones to the 100Ohm output impedance that was in some old standard, so I'd not be surprised for even a 32Ohm T1 being able to play well with a high OI. Is there an impedance curve available for the new T1?

There are all kinds of solid state amps, the O2 design being just one approach among many. If you're happy where you're at, no problem. But if you're curious, there's a lot to be learned from trying a variety of gear at various price points.

Don't want to derail this thread but what would be an objective upgrade in sound quality (ie wire with gain, no enhancement, 3D effect, colouration, warmth etc),

Seems these take a good long time to break in, a lot of it is likely the clamp easing up (which it has a decent amount and I expect it to ease up more in the future) and pads wearing in with use. Like the T1.2 they start off very warm but the warmth eases up some with use and the mids and treble comes to shine through more. This is something to keep in mind about any of the T1's in general as it gets worn in.

@kman1211, is the size of the cups in T1.2 the same as T1.3? (I think I have read that from you in the T1.2 thread, comparing 1990 Pro and Amiron vs T1.2 size of cups) If so, I will re-buy the Amiron Home.

Thanks in regard.

@rasmushorn Thanks for this review! How do you go about removing the earpads to get to the dampeners? I just got my T1.3 and would like to try this but don't want to hurt the headphone by doing it incorrectly.

Put a flat screwdriver in-between the house and cushion and twist gently. It will snap off easily and can be clicked back on afterwards.

When you put it back in its place make sure to align the shapes with their corresponding placement.
Hope it works for you.

I have had mine for nearly two weeks, amp is a Topping A90. HD800s is the other pair of headphones I have used extensively and like.

to be honest I wasnt impressed when I first heard the T13 - everything was veiled, slow, tired, sound stage was tiny and congested. The burn in process helped a little bit but improvement was subtle.

i then removed the sound absorption pads - wow what an improvement. The veil was lifted, energy is back, speed is back, sound stage expanded. I like what I hear finally - although still inferior to the HD800s

I note the comments here from Beyerdynamic technician that the pads are there to improve the sound. Don’t think I can agree to that.
