Beyerdynamic DT-880 and DT-990 review (pics)

I have DT990pro and my previous headphone was HD595. All I can say is that the DT990pro are better than the HD595 in every way except the high end may be a bit much for some and they might prefer a headphone with a rolled off high end. My next headphone will probably be HD650 because I want a headphone with a laid back darker sound too but I see some people don't like those either so while all these reviews and comments may seem helpful I find that often they just make purchasing decisions more complicated. They are all highly subjective opinions and nothing more.

you want headphones for movies? get a kinyo ky100 5.1. i have those and they are excellent for movies and great for gaming too. it's true 5.1 and you'll need a 5.1 sound card or similar. it even comes with it's own amp.

i think i bought it for about $40 bucks and for that price it's a no brainer.

No thanks. I'll take 'fake' DSP dolby headphone and a pair of quality stereo headphones for 5.1 surround over any 'real' cheap multi-driver 5.1 surround headphones.

That is a bunch of garbage. That must explain why people who are passionate about their ET sound buy $5k stax systems... because they first were going to use their HD600's, but realized that they were too good for movie's and went with the stax instead./sarcasm

The OP should try the 600 ohm version. They seem to remedy many of the flaws people talk about.. And pair them with a meir amp. I have owned the 7/8/9. To me the 8 and 9 sound very different. The 990 is easily more musical.. And the bass is also very different between the two. The 880s are technicaly superior and refined..Personally, I love treble. No trouble there. I still think the 48s cream them both in tonality, and other categories..Going off the 05 250 ohm version.

that is subjective of course. i personally believe that "audiophile" headphones are made for one thing only: music. And can't imagine a $600 headphone like my RS1 or HD650 to sound any better than my $40 kinyo for movies and games. never tried it, but i can imagine it sounding and looking pretty awkward to me.

Then you should try it.. Audio is audio.. If a 600 headphone sounds great for music it will sound great with games & movies..

That's 100% right.

I had the 5.1 headphones and amp ($100)

Moved up to a LD MK IV SE and HD-650s. Day and night difference.

Now I have move up to a WA6SE maxxed, using my HD-650s. After about 50 hours with this new setup, it is blowing the doors off of the LD.

I use these setups for my HT. Blu Ray/True HD/DTS HD MA.

That's an excellent price if they are the 2005 versions pictured in this review. Used prices vary anywhere from $180 to $240. Prior versions are a bit less, 880 usually more than the 990, but definitely nothing as cheap as $100 unless it's some vintage DT990.

I just spent 3 1/2 hours at the Ishimaru in Akiba testing headphones.
I went in wanting to pick up some Denon D2000s but came out with the DT990s instead.
They are noticably better than the 880s but not by a lot. They are also very close to the 990 Pro except with more controlled bass and slightly better sounding highs. I wouldn't be able to justify the price difference if my credit card wasn't so inviting.
In short these are fantastic. They are better than my 595s, W1000x, AD900s and they were better than the D2000s and even the D5000. Just my opinion but these are fantastic. The 990 Pros are fantastic too and if I was a little poorer I would have taken them instead.

There's so much entertainment that blends music and other mediums - anime and video games that are centered on music, for example. The quality of music in them is improving too, there's DTS audio and higher production values... IIRC the PS3 Final Fantasy XIII has uncompressed audio, though it's not really a music centered game. The requirements are a bit different but a $40 headphone will be beat flat ...
