Beyerdynamic DT 1990 PRO // DT 1990 PRO MK II -- Impressions Thread

I was already using the amiron wireless/tygr fleece with the DT 1990 (balanced pads) and dialled back the treble at 8khz with 1.5dB and am now testing the them with the dt (7/9)00 pro x fleece. No longer do I feel that I need to reduce the treble, finally the DT1990 is showing it's true strength! Going back to the original fleeces is climbing mount Beyer barefoot.

On a sidenote: the new DT 770 Pro x needs the same treatment; swap them fleeces and enjoy life

I received a Schiit Jotunheim 2 this morning. I have previously used the DT-1990 with an Asgard 2, a Hafler HA15, a Bottlehead Crack and a Magni 3. I liked it with all of these, but each exhibited a slight flaw, Asgard too warm, Crack even warmer, Hafler very detailed but a touch aggressive in the treble, Magni good tone but lacking microdetail. I am thrilled with the Jot driving the 1990, it has all the best characteristics of the others.

The DT-1990 is a very demanding headphone. Not terribly demanding of power, but definitely picks apart the quality of your music and source. I prefer the mellower-sounding Asgard 2 driving my Grado GH4 rather than the Jotunheim, but the Jot amp is awesome with the DT-1990. My primary headphone system is now Modius > Jotunheim > DT-1990/Analytic pads.

I used to drive my DT1900 with a Magnius, then switched to Valhalla 2 that was a great upgrade. Good to know that for solid state a Jotunheim is a good option. I like the tube sound a lot but read that you can get more details with good solid states.
My Liquid Platinum has tubes and lots of detail. My Asgard 3 sounds less resolving, probably due to the square wave shaping it uses.

Hi there,

First of all, im pretty new to this forum so bear with me.

I just have a quick question and would love to get your thoughts here.

I recently picked up the DT1990, used from the Beyerdynamic shop for around 350. Saw some videos&posts that these were great for music and gaming and indeed they are, I love them but there is a problem in my brain.

Maybe there is a headphone for the same price or even less that sounds better than these and is also great for gaming and music? This thought is killing the joy I get from the 1990s, which is pretty sad, but that is how my fkked up brain works. This may sound very silly, I know that....

I was thinking about getting the Hifiman 400SE for music and some IEMs like the Simgot for gaming. Do you have any ideas as to which HP (or HP/IEM combo) I should definitely check out before buying the DT1990? I listen to a few genres like rock, metal, deep house but mostly rap/hip hop.

Thanks for your help and sorry for bothering anyone.

It's all subjective man. If you thoroughly enjoyed the 1990 then just get them and be done with your chase. Thicker pads changes the dynamics a touch warmer if you ever get bored with them. (My DT 770 pro in photo) Yeah I know they're not 1990s

HiFiMAN Edition XS hands down IMO.

Get them direct from HiFiMAN refurbished. All the refurbs I buy from there are like new.

If you can EQ them, they are amazing.
Makes a HUGE difference.

They all sound different. The dt1990 is pretty perfect in what it does, if you want something different other headphones will suit you better. You can try a few other headphone and if you're lucky you might find your perfect match. Or not.
dt1990 are easy to EQ, you can lower the treble a bit, eventually raise the bass a bit. Every headphone will sound better with EQ.

When you get new headphones, your brain needs to adjust to the new sound signature, and it can take a few days. Use the DT-1990 for a week, then go back to your old set, and then compare. Until then your brain will resist the new signature, it's just how the brain works in all of us.

You know the funny thing with cleaning out your ears with wax remover after a long life of using iems is that it helps with sibilance. You'd think it would be the opposite, but I guess it blocks other frequencies more. It helped with Aryas, but the biggest change for me was with my dt1990.

I never could get myself to love this headphone. I could get it to sound better with eq (and I tried to eq it a lot), I liked it better with the elite velours. But I love the sound of my other headphones (except stellia, still working on that) whereas I could only get the dt1990 to only sound "good". So this has been sitting unused for a while and I was genuinely thinking of selling it.

But now. The best way I would describe the treble is delicious. My preference regarding the pads basically flipped with the analytical pads going form my least liked to my favorites. This is like really, really good. And yes, delicious mouth watering food is the best way to describe it.

Which is bad because I have other more expensive headphones that I just bought that I should be listening to. And now I'm keeping these. And I want to eq my Stellia's to sound like these. And I'm now curious about the hd800s with that headphone being treble heavy too.

EQ filter: 8kHz, -5dB, Q2.8, ~ similar to solderdudes hardware filter https://diyaudioheaven.wordpress.com/headphones/measurements/brands-a-i/dt-1990-pro/
TYGR fleece disc makes this similar

I don't like this notch at ~4.7 kHz.
Is that just a consequence of the measurement method?
Does this also occur in the real ear?
