Elite velours are fine but i would not waste money. Stock pads are superior and intended sound end of the day. I would switch the pads depends on my mood. Switching is very easy. Balanced is more fun, stimulating but fatiguing, analytical overall better.

A20 amp is waste of money. Good options are:
magni 3+
magni heresy
asgard 3
magnius
jds atom
topping l30
thx 789
thx 887
DAC:
modi 3
atom dac
topping e30
modius

Expensive ones most likely will not sound better. Since you can't use balanced with 1990 i recommend E30+L30. Class A single ended Asgard 3 amp might work nice with DT 1990 as well. Since you are considering $400 A20 i think modius+asgard 3 dac+amp stack for $400 would be nice for you.

Threw my A-pad 1990s back on today after a solid week+ of only the Elegias.
  • Definitely a more forward presentation and 3-dimensional, enveloping tonal quality vs the more 'picture on a wall' quality of the Elegias; with the 1990s it's more of a live feel, with the Elegias it's more like a great and crystal-clear reproduction of a recording
  • More bass and it hits harder than the Elegia
  • Treble can be a bit more brittle and one-dimensional but generally still nice
  • Mids are more robust on the 1990s but slighlty more resolving on the Elegias
  • The A-100 adds some tasty roundness to the bass and top end of the treble that I really dig, but it doesn't play well with the Eleigas (I assume impedance mismatch)
I dig the Elegias but also heart my 1990s. Great days in the world of headphones.

Im into something else. I talked to beyer and got a few of these foam pieces a few people showed interest and we talked about why they do this and if the 1990 will benefit from them. You can see it a few pages back from here.

And i can tell you why they do this it solves the problem with the beyer peak and all beyers will have these from now on

When my iec711 arrives i will show graphs how they measure on the 1990
