Beyerdynamic DT-1770: Product Info, Discussion and Impressions

Really enjoying my DT 1770's tremendously, only prob though (and not unique to this headphone) is that despite the large OD of the pads, the ID measures 55mm (2.16") and unfortunately my left lobe is being compressed against the pad and it creates pain after a certain duration. We use Jabra Evolve 80's in the office and the pads while slightly smaller OD-wise has a longer ID (64mm/2.52") due to the oblong/oval shape:

And these fit very nicely without any issues.

I placed it over the DT 1770 pad to illustrate the space to be gained due to the shape:

Any suggestions folks on replacement pads that might fit my needs?

@hanselmann - any chance Beyerdynamic would consider producing a similarly shaped pad? I realize it may affect the SQ but I'd sacrifice a little of that for pain free wear.

Thx!,
Tim

Have read about others experiencing channel imbalance with this headphone - either bass or vocals. Recently got these and experienced it myself. Channel imbalance for me is very frustrating so I thought maybe I got a bad pair or something. Normally I set the headphone so my ears is in the center of the pad so it doesn't touch any side - most comfortable setting for me. Somehow when I set it so that my ear lobes touch the bottom part of the pad the channel imbalance is gone. That's great but now they aren't the most comfortable headphones. My T90 which seems to have the same driver placement as DT 1770 doesn't have this problem.

Would like to see frequency measurements on the DT 1770. Couldn't find any on Innerfidelity (although found some on another forum). Some music sounds a little off to me with the DT 1770. Can't describe it but it seems like there is some frequency suck-out in some range. On some music it's like someone has set a crazy EQ settings with huge amount of bass and lots of treble which can sound artificial (although not fatiguing treble). I find these more "fun" than "neutral". And for me the bass isn't as tight as I would like it. It's not boomy but I guess I like shorter decay bass.

Anyway most of the time I really like them. Non-fatiguing treble is a plus. EDM is very (!) enjoyable on the DT 1770.

I'm in talks with the shop I bought mine from, who are talking to the Australian distributor to see if mine can be shipped off the Beyerdynamic to get tested. I've got what I think to be an imbalance favoring the left side.
I don't want them swapped, but tested properly by the manufacturer, who of course have all the proper gear and skills to test these properly, and if they come back from them with the thumbs up, I'll be happy.

I can wait as long as it takes for this to happen, I plan on keeping these for a long time, and I don't just want to swap them out for another pair with their own possible issues.

DT1770 every time. I heard the HE-560 twice with my own equipment and music and found them just incredibly boring, and I don't mean boring of the good type, i.e. a long term winner that doesn't overwhelm with upfront features, but boring in the sense of faceless, uninteresting, not engaging, without character. I would not say its a bad headphone, but definitely not my cup of tea.

I think you've described the planar type of sound in general lol.

Hi everyone, four months later and these headphones are still spectacular. No issues to speak of and I'm loving them for everything (movies, music, etc)! So much so that I'll be bringing them to work with me to replace my DT-770's....

....which begs the question, what do I do at home? I really have two options:
  1. Stick with the DT-1770 since they are spectacular all-arounders and I LOVE LOVE LOVE them (buy a second pair)
  2. Venture into new territory - purchase the Fostex TH-900 to satisfy my sub-bass needs, and later add-on the HD800 to satisfy my love of classical and soundtrack music

There have been some cursory comparisons in this thread but could someone provide a more detailed comparison of the DT-1770 vs. TH-900 for EDM, movies, etc. and a detailed comparison of the DT-1770 vs. HD800 for classical and soundtrack music? Not just which one you like better, but also any comments you might have on how they differ. I love the DT-1770's so much that I wouldn't hesitate to buy a second pair, but as with everyone else, I have the itch to know where the ceiling lies and if the TH-900/HD800 push that out far enough to be worth it.

I can't find a headphone that does both of these better than the DT-1770 in a single package (suggestions welcome if you have them), so I'm hoping someone has insight on how this pair will cover the bases vs. just buying another DT-1770.

Home rig is Bifrost Multibit --> Asgard 2, if that affects the choice. I check this thread most days so even if you're reading this much later on, your advice is appreciated!!

For home rig, get the Hifiman HE400S. Get a good amp/dac like the iFi Micro iDSD and they will do well in everything.

Hi fellows, the left side of my pair of 1770 sound distorted when playing very high or very low frequence. It happened 2 months after I got it. It might also sound imbalance in other frequence, but I didn't notice as it is not obvious.

Suprisingly, the problem gone after I keep playing the track sound distorted with a VERY LOUD volume for around 2 days. So if your pair have the channel imbalance problem, let's have a try to see if it works for you.

Cheers.

Hey Tim,
thanks for asking! First I should point out, that another product manager is responisble for the DT 1770 Pro headphones, so I wouldn't like to do "public guessing" about features to come in his portfolio.
Though, I understand, why some people would prefer oval shaped ear cups or - like in this case - inner dimensions of cushions.

Two things make me a bit reserved about this,
  • Sound. The physical shape of ear cushions has an enormous effect on sound and can affect the sound quality in a dramatic way. (Much more than cables ever could, by the way.) A change of inner ear cushion shape design would need to be tested extensively on an existing earcup design which "expects" circular designed cushions.
  • Wearing comfort. As you maybe know, beyerdynamic headphones - both pro and consumer - are known to have a really good comfort for most shapes of heads and outer ears. We would need real strong compelling reasons to justify any changes, since many of our customers associate the wearing comfort with exactly the design we currently have. Don't forget: here on head-fi you may be many "high commitment" guys who like to experiment and check out alternatives. Most people - though - don't and like to settle with a solution they BELIEVE to be tested and work well.
Hope, my insight is interesting.

Mine just developed bass and mid distortion in the right earcup, they may have to be returned, but going to try what fixed my K612 in the past. I have come across a similar problem on my K612(a known problem with both the K6 and K7) in the past, doing a heavy break-in with pink noise very loud for a few days off and on fixed the problem on the AKG. I'm going to do the same with these. Could be quality control issues related to the multi-layer drivers as both the AKGs and the DT 1770 use multi-layer drivers.
