I am interested in getting one of the Beyerdynamik 770/880/990 phones, mainly because they sound interesting and have a different sonic sig to my current phones (AT + Denon).

However, I have been trying to rationalise the different models available, and to say it is confusing is an understatement!

So, how about some of you people who have owned some of the current models help us poor confused Beyer virgins out a little?

If I list the models that are available (although I am so confused I wouldn't be surprised if I missed out a load and made some others up!) perhaps you kind people could add comparative reviews by the ones you have owned. That way we might end up with info on all the available models in one thread.

There's also the year, as well.

They'll revise a model and not change it's name, give it a v2 on the end, or anything. I don't know all the differences myself, and this should only be relevant if you are buying used. I went through a lot of this in my personal research, and found it quite confusing too.

Generally, the DT880 600 ohm is the best headphone beyerdynamic has after the T1. Some also argue the DT48 as well.

I agree about the DT880/600. I have never heard the DT48, but I have owned just about all the others on the OP's list

Same goes for me...

The DT880/600 would be the best way to go for the price. If you need closed cans, the DT770/600s are very similar (not as airy, but with more warmth in the treble and slightly more impactful bass).

i love beyer. they are tops in my book.

and i don't think you can go wrong with any of their cans other than the 32 ohm.
i had the 32 ohm dt880s for about 2 weeks.
they had some problems i simply couldn't get past.

i replaced them with the dt880 pros (as i was a little afraid to go 600 ohms at the time), and i've been as pleased as punch with them. i can honestly say the problems i had with the 32 ohm model are not present with the 250 ohm.

i'm sure there's a bit of gain in quality to be had with the 600 ohm version. after all, it has been said many times by many respected members here. however, i'm more than happy with the 250 ohm pro as it is a little bit easier to power, and the shorter coiled cable is ideal for my work setup (desk listening).

also, the dt990 is a really nice, underrated phone. i think it gets less attention here because it is a bass lover's can. which strikes me as wildly inconsistent. because denons, ultrasones, and many others also are bass-lovers cans as well, and get tons of love here. methinks it's because the 990s are fairly affordable.

...so, if you like deep, impactful bass, the dt990 may be the way to go. the only thing you sacrifice, IMHO, is a teeniest bit of recessed midrange.

those are my impressions. good luck w/ your potential purchase!!!
