Vangelis - 1492
Vangelis - Antarctica
Vangelis - Chariots of Fire
Isham - Crash
Best of James Bond
Queen - A Kind of Magic (Highlander)
Prince - Purple Rain
I recommend the "Get Shorty" soundtrack. Lot's of good catchy jazz tunes. Track #14, "Chubb Sub," is one of my reference tracks (listen for bass articulation).
Cowboy Bebop OST
Shadow of the Colossus OST
Requiem For A Dream
These are soundtracks that really define their game/film. AND they manage to both sound good and communicate the central emotions & ideas within the game/film as a whole even when separated from their original source and listened to out of context.
I second Requiem for a Dream,
The movie Heat has a great soundtrack as well, especially the stuff by Moby
also the Soundtrack from the Movie Rush is by Eric Clapton has some great and little known Eric Clapton insturmentals.
I find that a lot of the new music, at least new to me, comes from movies or even TV shows that I see. Eg, from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind a song by Beck--Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime
from the last scene of the last episode of Six Feet Under--a song by Sia Breathe Me
from Lost in Translation-Jesus and Mary Chain--Like Honey
