I may be in the market for another portable with a digital out.
I am currently using the optical out on my Sony D-303.
This works well, but I have no other portable with a digital out to compare it to.

I know people will suggest the Optimus CD-3400, but this is too difficult to locate.

So, does anyone have any suggestions for a PCDP with a digital out?
Skip Protection, battery life and headphone out quality are irrelevant to me.

Step 1: Plug power cable into wall. Step 2: Plug other end of power cable into....umm.... Step 0.5: Order something to power with power cable.

In fact, unless you search for a non-U.S. version of a high-end Panasonic PCDP, you'll be pretty much stuck with Sony. Of Sony's current PCDP line, the D-EJ855, D-EJ955, D-EJ1000 and D-EJ2000 are the only ones that I know of that has an optical digital output. Of those, only the D-EJ855 and the D-EJ1000 are officially available in the U.S.; the D-EJ955 isn't available in North America at all, and the D-EJ2000 is a brand-new model that won't make it to North America until Spring 2003.

i've got an opt-out on my pana sl-sx410 (and a line out). ( http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showt...hlight=slsx410 ) it 's a white jack labelled "opt out" and "a.shock off only".

never tried it, don't know what it worth. the line out is a slightly less good than the one of my d25s when use with an airhead. if it's just to compare, i get mine on ebay for 30$ + shipping.

btw, what do you connect on an optical output ?

PS: I bought this unit is for my little sister. She will use it only with a pair of porta pro directly out of the headphone jack, perhaps one day an amp on the line out, certainly not the opt-out. If you're such a maniac
I 'm ok to trade it to you for an equivalent pdcp.

you can still find older D-EJ711's, and D-EJ721's on the net, either new or refurbed, prices ranging from $65 on up. I just picked up a brand new 721 for the same purpose you cite.

Akar,
How about Sony D-555? It was the first Discman to have tos-link optical output. You will be diappoint on sound quality if you get the new player (EJ-01 and such), once you have the D-303.

I have a D-345, the thing is great. Sounds a hell of a lot better than another portable I've listenetd to. Plus it's loud and bass id very clean. If only Sony would make a player like that today

I agree your idea ~~

D-Z555's optical output is best in my discman

Sony D-EJ925. Haven't heard the D-303, so I can't compare sound quality, but IMO it sounds quite good. Don't know if it's available in USA...

I've heard the D-EJ925 and it is about 70% of the quality of the D-303's line out. A great line out, considering today's standard.
