Best OPAMP upgrade for the Matrix M-Stage
Apr 14, 2014 at 1:02 PM Post #16 of 35
Thanks for the sources.

Is there some unified list somewhere with people's opinions on various op-amps? It seems like such a cheap, interesting way to tweak the sound, but I have no idea where to start.

Thanks again!

Not that I know of.
If this thread doesn't then there really is nothing unified.

I have found someone selling diy parts. They have a list of materials:

  • Part #    Quantity
    AD1896AYRS    2
    AD1862N    4
    AD1865N    1
    CS8414-CS    3
    TDA1543A    2
    AD1865N-K    1
    TDA1541A    1
    AD1853    1
    AD8397ARDZ    1
    PCM2707P    1
    THS4631    9
    OPA1632D    5
    LT1763CS8-3.3    2
    LT1763CS8-5    2
    Dyna-hi board    4
    Dynalo Board    1
    PCM2902E    2
    PCM2704DB    1
    OPA227     5
    OPA2134A    1

Of these if there are op amps in the list which one would pair best with the matrix m-stage.

Thanks,
Zach

Any one tried this one
Burson Supreme Sound Discrete Opamp Modules?

Would those work in M-Stage?  On this page  http://www.partsconnexion.com/opamp_burson.html  it says direct replacement for  OPA627.

Thanks

Hmm... not sure Chris why you assumed  I am trying to cram two of those opamps into my amp . Price of $140 is for a pair ,single would be $70.
On the other hand price of $70 is roughly 1/4 cost of new amp .
What do you say to WA2  owners buying two 421A tubes costing more then half the value of their amps?

Ooops, they are $70 for ONE DUAL Op Amp.
Thanks for straightening me out.
Doesn't sound so painful now.
I don't actually know if the Burson Op Amps really are better than an IC Op Amp.
Call me sceptical.

I must admit, the guys who pay that much for two 421A tubes for a WA2 are way more hard core than me.
Let's just say, as much as I like tubes, I wouldn't do that.

Hello gentlemen,

You can get the OPA637, which is optimized and more stable at Mouser Electronics for about $25. They only come in a single channel so you would need two.

I use them in a custom SS amp I built--they are considered the best for a reason.

The list of opamps in the PDF is nice, you should additionally consider OPA827, OPA602BP, OPA209, OPA228, OPA1641, and OPA1612 to the list.

LM4562/LME49720, 827, and 1612 need extra psu bypass capacitors to truly shine.  It's identical as what others do to the Audio-gd opamps using Mundorf or Russian PIO capacitors, if you've read about that.

I would personally pair HD6x0 with OPA827 or OPA602.  Clear, neutral chips with excellent soundstaging, 827 a bit more so than 602.  827 is a bit fuller in sound than 602.  The low bass is lacking in 827 without at least a ceramic byapss cap.  It sounds best with a ceramic + Vishay MKP1837 caps.  602 sounds best with a ceramic + 10uF tantalum caps.

This is good information -- about the sound.  The HD650's don't need any more fullness than they already deliver.  I would go for neutrality in the opamp with this pair of headphones.

If you want neutral, try the LM4562.

I just purchased the Matrix M-Stage DAC, having purchased the Matrix M-Stage AMP last month and am now considering upgrading the opamp.  I have found a few listings for the OPA627AP/BP & OPA637BP having the biasing mod.  I also spotted the LM4562 as is or on a dip adaptor.  If I go with the LM4562 does it need to be on the dip adaptor?  Also how does the OPA637BP compare to the LM4562?  BTW, this is my first post, I've been lurking for a couple of months now, ever since I started watching youtube videos by Jude & also Hifiguy528.

The LM4562 is a straight substitute for the stock Op Amp.
The LM4562 is a very clean, open sounding Op Amp.
I found the OPA627 to be slightly foggy by comparison.

DO.
NOT.
USE.
THE.
OPA637.

PERIOD.

Thank you for letting me know that I definitely should not get the OPA637BP.  Seeing it was the most expensive of them all, I was figuring it to be the better option.

hmmm... I need to figure out how to properly add the quote...  ;(

:D
The reason why you don't want to use the '637 is because it may oscillate in a Matrix M Stage.
This is bad, very bad.

There has been much written about opamp upgrades for the M Stage. Here is the one I settled on and found to be the best:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LME49710HA-X2-Adaptor-/180872434827?

I no longer use my M Stage much, but when I did that opamp set worked wonders.
