Best metal / heavy metal headphones?

I'd look into Grados if I were you. I have some 580s and a pair of Grado 225s and I like them both but for different types of music. In my opinion, the Grados are much better for the kind of music you're talking about. Search the forums for more info.

If you find the Grados comfortable, they will probably be your best choice. I don't like their fit. I use the Sony MDR-V6's for all of my heavy metal listening, they are my phone of choice.

I probably should have mentioned the comfort issue, but I think you'll find it to be no big deal, especially with replacement pads (Vwap or TTVJ).

i'll second the grado recommendation, though i'd recommend 325s or allesandro ms2s over 225s for metal listening. if you're more of a hardrocker than a metal man, then 225s will definitely do the job.

If you like V6's, you'll like A900's

I don't agree with the a900 recommendation. For me, the a900's emphasized the upper bass, and there was a thickness in the bass that blurred the midrange and made listening unenjoyable.

Go with aluminium chambers of Grado SR-325 or Alessandro MS-2. They are pretty much agressive, forward sound, very sharp resolution, tight bass, their brightness is suitable for guitar strings. Without bowl pads indeed.

All Grados/Alessandros are easy to drive without an amp, but SR-325's/MS-2's definitely need an amp to perform their best. I guess the same for SR-225.

Keep your Pimeta, it's a good choice for Grados.

I would go for the SR-325, tight bass (important for drums) and guitarr riffs sound so evil >

I used to own Grado RS-1/RA-1 combo. I can still remember the pounding riffs of Metallica "Enter the Sandman" with this setup. Unbelievable that a little wooden cup could raise so much hell! Pounding bass, crashing cymbles, crystal clear. Those are big bucks though, and many here actually prefer the 325's to the RS-1's. For rock, I've not heard anything that can top that Grado. Make sure you've got a good amp that can properly drive them.

Unfortunately I don't think the V6's or the Grado SR80's make good choices for metal music. The upper mid/lower treble of the V6's is too harsh, and the midrange isn't thick enough. Ends up sounding good for the low end, but thin through the mids and hurts the ears on the high end.

On the Grado SR80's, they're just too darned bright. Take an album like "Slave to the Grind" by Skid Row, and tell me that isn't too much high end.

I wish I listened to stuff like classical more, where I'm sure stuff like the Grado's sounds much more suited...
