I'm planning on using it with my laptop and ipod so I don't want them to be huge. I'm not an audiophile and I'm not planning on becoming one any time soon so as long as the quality of the sound is decent I'm happy. Could you guys please recommend a set for $40 or under?

Thanks in advance

under 40 is a bit of a tough one. Also.. you don't become an audiophile... it just.... grabs you...

Anyways, check the linked thread. The denon ah-p732, the coby, and the ksc75 come to mind. Telling us your music preferences would also help alot.

I mostly listen to trance when studying and I'm gonna be using them to listen to recorded lectures. that's pretty much it. but since I'll be wearing them in the library they can't have a lot of sound leaking.

He said closed phones.

Just dont get the Sennheiser px200/pmx200 or AKG K-26P, because they sound hollow and honky......theyre terrible!!!

I dont know what the best small closed portable would be in your range though. IEMs would have been the best sound and noise isolation but you dont want them.
$40 is a tough budget for closed.

Check the for sale forum for the best buy. Maybe you can score some used $100 phones for $40?

I'm still a fan of the SoundMAGIC P10. It's collapsible, closed, circumaural, and small. I've got a short review here, if you're interested.

However, I would still recommend IEMs. There are a lot of decent options out there in this price range, and should isolate better than many closed cans under $40.

I heard a lot about the JVC HARX700. I have not heard them myself, but they are closed and in your budget.

Good recommendation, but I'm not sure I would ever want to be seen in public with those babies.

The Sennheiser HD201's are cheap, well built, comfy and a decent set of closed cans.
