What sources will you be running them with? (ipod? laptop? vintage Marantz receiver? etc)
 
There really is no better basshead can for the money than the Sony XB-500.

Ultrasone DJ1 / HFI-580, absolutely phenomenal for trance. Punchy fast bass that goes sub-woofer deep.
Hight are crystal clear.

Hey, OP - trance is one of my favorite genres of music. My Denon AH-D5000 are just fantastic with trance. The bass goes unbelievably low and strong, and the everything else is terrifically clear and distinct. It might not be as affordable as, say, an XB-500, but it is definitely a very good choice for closed headphone electronic music.

I agree about the subwoofer low on the hfi 580.

I'm in the same boat. I listen to alot of alt rock also.  How do the M50's compare to the DJ1's and HFI-580 for these genres?
