Just to confirm Malveaux, when you say you tested them with J-pop did you mean that other thread where the OP had 3 embedded youtube videos? Problems with those video's were a) they were terrible quality as you pointed out, but more importantly b) they weren't Japanese, they were Korean, which generally is very different for j-pop.

From my experience with the K550 through a PA2v2 for portable use and a Schiit Asgard at home, amplification is not necessary. I'd have to say it results in slightly more bass, though. Very slight.

hmm..i got my audio technica ath a900x for bout half a year...this can can drive jrock song quite impressive..listening to babymetal right now..
blow my other cheap headphone away...tight bass,clean vocal..
 
AFAIK - Grados / Alessandro drive Rock/Metal song the best..used to have MS1i ..So good driving rock song
