Best headphones for classical music
Dec 19, 2019 at 6:12 PM Post #76 of 148
My main headphone has been the Sennheiser HD600 and 6xx (650 equivalent) for almost everything. I had been disappointed with the HD700 they seemed bass light and somewhat wearing to listen to. I have just started using them exclusively for classical music (source Primephonic) and am very pleased with them. Also they are very comfortable for long term listening. I don’t have and haven’t heard the 800s, which get top ratings, but am glad that I’ve found something that the 700s excell at.

HD800 with SDR mod + sonarworks = Endgame for classical music. -former concertmaster of VMO
I love classics but I have been walking the Denon road with D5000, D5200 and now D7200, which has give me lots of joy but I want more, more of separation, stage and 3D when I listen to classic music and jazz. On my short list are Beyer 1990 Pro, Sennies HD6xx/HD660s and Hifiman Sundara. Of all the reviews I have digested so far, Sundara turns out on the top, but only slightly. Those reviews are based on all genres and not on classics in particular. I will keep my Denon AH-D7200 for all other genres, it is OMG magically fantastic, yet I am in the market for a phone that puts me virtually physically in front of classic performances and I dont care if it performs poorly with other genres. T1 and T5p are way out of my budge. Which one?

I listen almost exclusively to classical. The HD-600's are wonderful except that they lack deep bass. You won't miss it unless you're an organ music addict, and in any case headphones cannot match the physicality of full-range speakers. I also have Focal Clears, which to me sound much like the Senns but with a little stronger bass. Also, they don't require as much amplifier power as the Sennheisers.

MDR-Z1R. Technically they're described as closed back by sony, but they're vented, perhaps semi open?. They're expensive brand new at 2200 €, got mine 2nd gand for 1.5k us dollar.

LOL, I am an audiophile on budget who hangs out at Massdrop looking for great deals, but I guess, to enjoy classics, it wont get cheaper than what you guys suggest.
And for while laying in bed listening ... IER-Z1R
Lovely,,,,the only chance to be near gears you use is to politely beg a Japanese lady wearing white gloves at Sony showroom in Ginza to try em on. Are you a Sony fan?

Yes I'm a sony fan, except for their mobile phones and TVs. I had two xperias and only troubles. Currently with a Samsung A50.

I had always walkman mp3 players E507 was my first sony DAP in 2004, A818 , X1060 followed.
Briefly had an iPod classic, that was my turn to lossless began. Then a Fiio x3 OG and in 2014 back to walkman with an A17, then zx100 and have this wm1A since 2016. Xba-H3 were my first foray into high-end IEM, xba-A3, xba-z5/MDR-Z7 and now the IER-Z1R/MDR-Z1R and IER-M7

I love these type of threads.
It’s basically like asking what the best way to cook a steak is. Literally depends on your tastebuds. I know quite a few classical fans and they all have their own ideas on what constitutes the best sound for their liking..just like the rest of us. Some dig the HD600/650 whilst others spring for the HD800 or an AKG K701/702.
To any query like this there are about as many (right) answers as there are folks with ears.

Now to the more thrilling conundrum of finding the best cucumber for tzaziki?
