This is by far the best example of what should be disregarded as misinformation. Here you have a complete newbie endorsing fake headphones, yes, as if the knock-off market isn't bad enough.

Beyond the obvious ethical and legal issues: which fake m50?  No doubt there is just one fake version out there and the makers have the strictest quality control.

For $200 tops, a second-hand pair of AKG K702's or Q701's would be my recommendation:

would be my recommendation if you're coming from Grados, as they have a bit more bass presence and are a bit less 'audio-engineer'y.

Not to sound harsh but more bass presence than grados? And are you implying grado cans are used more by "audio-engineers". I would think even the k701 would be more reference material than say a grado sr325.
Do keep in mind he's going to be running unamped.
k701 unamped = :O

Im intriuged by the hm5s. ill have to read more about the Q701. i always figured that they would be out of my price range. ive been thinking about getting a cheap amp. it would probably be a used pa2v2 though. im not sure if i want a portable amp or a desktop. i would realy like it to be portable so i can use it in the car. the cals have also interested me. ive also heard good things about the senn hd25s. almost forgot the fostex t50rp.

I do hope you're talking about the makers of the authentic m-50, not the fake sellers.
