Hi everyone

My girlfriend is learning to DJ and also listens to a lot of music on the move, and she is in love with my Senheisser HD25's, but she can't have them!

I am looking for something under £50 that might be similar, in terms of size, sound quality and isolation, although they don't have to be as good.

They would be used for a lot of general listening as well as DJ'ing.

Any recommendations?

Cheers

Under £50 there are very limited options and it's harder to choose and I don't know of many but IF under any circumstances you are able to increase the budget to under £100 then I would highly recommend the Audio-Technica ATH-M40X. They are over-ear, closed back so they have very good sound isolation and a Neutral sound signature which means they are great for music of any genre and also great for DJ'ing. They are on Amazon right now for £89. You could also go for the ATH-M20X too which are £45 on Amazon.

Best under £100 - ATH-M40X

Best under £50 - ATH-M20X

Also note that the M20X does not have a removable cable which is made worse by the fact that it's 3m long. M40X cable is removable.

Thanks for the suggestions...

I should have mentioned I would like them to be On-ear like the HD25's, mainly for portability but she also likes the feel of them. Part of me is wondering if I shoudl splash out for some new HD25s and give her my old mk1's!

As you say, Im not sure how good these under £50 cans are. I dont have enough time to listen to them as I leave in a few days and there are no good shops nearby!

Any more suggestions appreciated and I'll check them all out. What do you think of the AKG y50's, they come up a lot in that range?

The M40X is absolutely amazing when it comes to just relaxing and listening to music and they are comfy too, they have pretty good soundstage for closed backs and if you put HM5 pads on them the comfort as well as the soundstage increases. The M20X is great too but I don't think it's worth it because of the non-removable cable which wouldn't be an issue if it wasn't bloody 3m long. The AKG Y50's are also amazing and your best bet for on-ear headphones within your price range, they are budget on-ear kings, I say go with these. I love the AKG sound signature, I have the K712 Pro and it's just beautiful.

Thanks, yeah the Y50's look like the right size and price....its good to hear you like the sound. Some of the amazon reviews aren't so positive, stories of them falling apart, and the sound being weird.

How natural or flat would you say the Y50s were? Do you think there is nothing else in their price range that can rival them?

The frequency response isn't completely flat, I would describe them as slightly warm/bassy headphones but the mids and treble are quite balanced. I can't really think of anything else like these within the same price range, there's the Grado SR80e but those are open back.

Well that sounds ok, sounds quite similar to the HD25s. People always say Hd25s are quite flat and balanced, I have always found them really bassy! But in a good way

Anybody else have any alternatives to the AKG Y50's? Before I bite the bullet :)

Thanks for all your help

Be sure to visit r/headphones over on Reddit and use their purchase help thread. The template that they use for purchase advice is very specific and should help you narrow it down perfectly.

If she loves your Senns I am betting she will be thrilled with these Superluxes...it seems like they are pretty close to the original

Superlux HD660. Maybe get her DT770 earpads for them because the stock earpads have a narrow opening for the earlobes, but otherwise the cups are large enough for most people.

You can order the HD660 and earpads from Thomann.

the HD660 are over ear, the OP said ON ear was the preference...if only SUperlux made something like that....

Thanks for the replies

The superluxes look interesting but after digging into reviews and comments it seems they aren't built that well and the sound isn't that similar, but I guess it wouldn't be for the price. But I can't get them in the UK in time anyway!

The akg y50 seem to be the best contender right now. But I've just seen the akg y55, yet can't find any comparisons between them.

Does anyone know anything about the y55?

AKG Y55 are very bassy, but more in the 'tastefully overblown lush-subwooferish' way and not the 'boomy dre beats' way.
But still not in the more accurate articulate way the of the HD25.
I would say it's not a tool for DJ'ing. It's more of a consumer enjoyment headphone.

Philips SHL3300 is another excellent choice worth considering. I would say it sits about half way between the HD25 and the AKG Y55 in terms of fun and accuracy.
