My daughter sent me a $50 gift certificate to Musician's Friend for Christmas. I don't really need any guitar gear, but it wouldn't be bad to have an alternative pair of cans to hang next to my Senn HD580s. Thing is, I don't want to spend much over the $50.

Closed would be good. A different sound signature from the big warm, lush Senn thing might be nice. Circumaural is a must. I see Senn, Audio Technica, Beyer, AKG, M-Audio, Sony...

Any recommendations?

I own HD580s. I'd think the 555s would be pointless. Looking for something with a different sound sig.

There's a pretty good review of the M-Audio Q40.

From what I've read, low end AKGs are things to avoid. The lowest level to consider is the K240/K271

There have been brief mentions of the AT studio monitor headphones, like the ATH-M50, but no in depth reviews.

The Sony MDR-V6 get a lot of good press

The AKG K-81DJ is in or around that price, and is a nice listen for the money. They are closed (I used them at work

), and I think you'll find their presentation to be more forward than your HD-580's.

Hope that helps...

The Fostex T50RP headphones are currently $63. If you must stay @$50, they have the T20's also.

They seem interesting & cheap enough to play around with. Hook 'em up directly to your speaker amps & see what happens.

The problem with the Fostex is that they recently changed the pads. If you get one with the new pads, they're pretty good. Ones with the old pads have very little bass.

I'd look at the Sony MDR-V6. I owned a pair for years and they're not bad. They do have a different sound signature from the HD-580, but they're also closed, fold up and can be driven by an iPod. They're nice for travel or a little isolation.
