I need a nice pair of over ear headphones, I dont really know much about headphones.
Can anyone tell me the best headphones for under $250, either noise canceling or not and reasons why they are good.

You your thread question:
..................... (like I'm going to start a feud)

Tell me this:
Price range ($250)
Music genres and headphone uses
Headphone preferences (comfortable, build, on ear)
Any possible sources (ipod, pc/soundcard, mp3 player)

starNdust speaks the truth. After reading thread after thread on these boards for hours on end, you get to the point where it depends on preference. You have to ask yourself how bright you want them, how laid back, soundstage, and etc...

I would read threads about HD 598's and/or DT880's. They are popular in that range and may even lead you to other headphones. All about research.

Headphone preference - comfortable
ipod mainly

Do you know whether these Audio Technica Noise Cancelling Headphones or these Goldring NS1000 are any good?

Yea- noise canceling drives a nail through my ears.

Goldring were hot a while back, but they were more of a Headphone of the Month thing.

The best all-rounder under $250 is the Sennheiser HD-600, used. It has stood the test of time and many FOTM headphones. In the short history of high-end headphones, it's a classic. Though it is open and best used at home.

For a closed portable, I like the Sony MDR-7509HD. They're my travel headphones.
