Speaking only for the power / prog / symphonic metal genres (which is what I primarliy listen to), my vote goes to:

Theocracy - Mirror Of Souls

Now don't get me wrong, there were a lot of good power / prog / symphonic metal releases this year, but none of them impressed me quite as much as the Theocracy CD (especially the song "Laying The Demon To Rest"). And what a shock it was for me to learn that the band hails from the USA (Georgia of all places)! Normally music of this calibur comes from outside of the USA these days...

At any rate, if you are into these genres of metal, you owe it to yourself to check out the Theocracy CD - tasty, tasty music.

Indeed, I love that album. Jakob Dylan's solo album "Seeing Things" was also great. I also discovered "Vampire Weekend" by Vampire Weekend in 2008, I liked that too.

I thought Vampire weekend was really good, and then I listened to it more than 10 times and it just kind of became boring to me. They are great pop songs but I feel like they lack a lot of depth.
