Hey guys, I'm looking for a pair of versatile headphones for around $100. I listen to a wide variety of music from classical to jazz to rock to hiphop, and everything in between. I just need something versatile that can handle whatever I throw at it and can be driven well by an iPod. I'd appreciate your suggestions!

For this current price, I don't think you're going to be able to do better than these:

$56 -- http://www.amazon.com/Koss-ProDJ100-Headphones/dp/B003X1BEKI/

But I can't tell you if they need an amp or not.

I listened to them amped and unamped and just didn't like the sound or comfort. $100 is a strange price point to be in. I would try for a used pair of Beyers here. dt 770's are nice. Honestly, you might look at the Panasonic htf-600. They drive easy and sound great for about $35. Check out the massive thread here about them.

GL!!

+1 for the Aurvana Live! as that has the same driver as my beloved D1001

I'll also throw in the SR-80i. Highly mod-able, and sound great stock, they are quite versatile.

The two flaws major flaws the 80i's have are: sound-leakage due to being completely open, and they might not have enough sub-bass for hip-hop (I think they're alright, but the Aurvana Live!'s are much better here).

what would y'all think if i upped the budget a little bit and entered the ath-m50's in to the mix?

If you're doing that - then consider the Brainwavz HM5 and Shure SRH840.  Both are pretty good all-rounders.  Personally I wouldn't use the M50 for classical or jazz - although it will do well for Rock and Hip-hop.

I'd like to thank everyone for the advice! I went with the KRK KNS-8400's just picked them up. Loving the neutral sound and after having the Senn HD280pros, the soundstage sounds HUGE (I know in comparison to open cans it's not!). Bass is a little lacking but after some burn-in i'm assuming it'll become a little more extended and prominent. I appreciate it guys!
