I wanted to build a silver or gold plated copper wire with gold or rhodium connectors. Most likely braided since they seem to be more sturdier.
As for soldering I learned how to do it in high school tech class so I'm sure I can manage. Where can I get soldering machine w/ fine pen tip? Any hardware store you'd recommend?

Where do you get all the parts for these? Are there any resources where I can learn more about cabling?

I wanted to upgrade my cables but cables from toxic and etc are way too expensive... I felt as though I could save some dough by making my own

A soldering iron, solder, helping hands, wire strippers and all that good stuff can be acquired at your local electronic components store like Jaycar. Because you want to go with silver cables you'd also need flux to solder it properly. There are advanced soldering tutorials on YouTube that can help you out with that.
Best place to get silver plated cable would be on eBay. You can get it at a decent price there. Enthusiast grade connectors are a specialist item which will be quite hard to get your hands on in Australia. So I would get those online as well. But they will set you back maybe about $20 a piece, depending on which one you want.

Would I use soldering silver instead iron? Heard of some cable brands using iron to solder to put together the cable.

As for the wires, if you buy them on ebay, how do you know if they are of good quality. Like if you buy OCC 6N Silver-plated wire, how would you know they are of that quality since you really can't test or know by just looking at them.

I think I'm going to learn about soldering near end of this month when i get two weeks off!
Then I'll really bombard you w questions lol
And btw thanks for taking the time to answer these questions

No worries mate. Just be warned that there is a lot of snake oil going around when it comes to cables, especially silver cable.

The soldering iron is the gun looking thing that heats up your solder and solder is the wire that you melt to form the connection. You can get silver solder from anywhere they sell solder from. Normally people use tin based solder for your everyday electrical soldering which is actually all you need about 60/40 or 63/47. But if you want to go for all silver than silver based solder is also ready available.

In regards to buying silver plated cable on eBay. How will you ever know if the cable is of good quality if you buy from a well known company? There a HUGE chance that these companies are just reselling you the exact same chinese cables they sell everywhere else. So it's up to you. IMO, all the high-end silver inter-connects you get around get all their cables from china as well. Everything comes from there.
At least of eBay you can actually check peoples feedback. But that's my opinion. I won't go any further than that on the topic.

PS. Im not professional electrician or electrical engy, but I'm pretty good with a soldering iron.

Ooh, a good thread, must sub :)

I hope there'll be another meetup in Sydney soon, I know there was one just a couple of months ago but I couldn't make it...

Any interest in a mini meet around Parramatta?

A parramatta meet would be pretty sweet!

Excellent!

Maybe we can do a Sat early arvo get-together. We just need to find a place...

I'll post in the thread about the previous Sydney meet to see if there's an interest in a Parra mini meet soon...

I could possibly get the Granville Kewpies hall hired for free for a few hours. My wifes dad used to be the president of the club. But I'm not really keen on organizing the whole thing.

If you can get the space, I can do the rest!

Let's see if there's more interest first - for now we have 3 people who expressed interest since I posted about it an hour ago.

Ok. I'll have to find out tonight if we can get it. Let's take this to a new thread, call it "Can Con 4.5! Sydney, Australia Meet!"

Unfortunately, I can't get the hall. Apparently, there was a "hostile takeover" and now the new comity aren't even from the area. So we no longer have any ties with the club.

Thanks for trying anyway!

I have a few places in mind - there's a good room in the 2nd floor of Granville Town Hall - and there might be a good room in Parra town hall. I'll call around in the next couple of days just to get an idea of how much would it cost to rent the space.
