I wouldn't use this for anything but IEMs to be honest, if you were going to drive headphones. It only has USB power to go on (500mA), and if you've ever tried driving headphones from a portable amp powered only by USB you'll understand my reasons. Expensive opamps and nice caps can't overcome that limitation. Now if it had the ability to hook up a 12V wallwart, that'd be a different matter.

How do you rip 24/96?
Would that just be 24bit Aiff via Max?

You can't rip 24/96 as CDs are only 16/44.1 to begin with. Some online music stores, such as Linn Records, offer 24/96 downloads.
By the way, my 'Cube died and I took it back. I'm getting a Cryo Parts PC Link II instead, as it will convert optical to coax, which works just as well for me, since I have a MacBook Pro. Unfortunately it doesn't do 24/96 USB.

Would the Prodigy Cube or another USB DAC w/ external power be a better idea, for a home audio system.
Like this? Amazon.com: Audiophile Products Fubar III USB DAC / Headphone Amplifier: Electronics
Amazon.com: Audiophile Products Supplier Power Supply Unit: Electronics
Does it matter? As far as headphones go I'm only using my Bose in-ears

I really need USB 24/96 for some FLACs I have. Plus 24bit sounds more open and detailed when upsampled. Is this the best option? I have a dell xps so no OPTICAL just HDMI and yeah...

is that a fact? I would have thought that it'd only increase THD+N

So changing optical to coax output will yield noticeable sound difference out of the macbook pro in files that are 24/96? What about the normal cd flac rips?
iszatso: Since your MacBook Pro doesn't have coax digital output, your question is redundant.

To me songs sound that way when upscaled yes. Could be just me though. In foobar I always try to put it on 24bit.

Does anyone know if this device supports 5.1 surround sound through the optical or the coax ports? i could tell from the pictures that it does not have 5.1 analog. I have Logitec Z5500 speakers which I want to connect though my laptop so I wanted to make sure that the CUBE can support the speakers features.

So has anyone tried the Audiotrak Prodigy Cube's USB to SPDIF capability? Since it's using the same TENOR chip as the stello U2 ($300), it could be a decent bargain for just getting 24/96 flacs out.

So I got one of these and honestly can't tell the difference between it and the headphone out on my Lenovo T500. Not sure if it's my inexperienced ears or if the headphone out on the T500 is better than I thought. I'm running some Denon D2000's. Going to do some more testing and then probably sell it.
