The HE6se is a pretty decent hp but having the susvara has really spoiled me. It is IMO not a giant killer, just another good hp and for $650 it might be a keeper for some. No, I have not given it burn in time and yes, it will be going back to Adorama. Will it improve, perhaps, but not that much and I can't see grabbing it for a listening session when I have the susvara!

Thank you, for once this thread was used for its intended purpose and you talked me out of buying one.

This is an exemplary demonstration of self-restraint that is deserving of much kudos--I have to admit, so credit where it is due. For me personally, however, the He6SE presents a slightly different challenge, since it brings back nostalgic memories of an he-6 I owned and sold, earlier in my journey. Now this 6SE seems to be reconnecting me with a past and a set of sonic flavors I seem to have parted ways with too prematurely. I adore my Susvara, but that is a sentimental void it cannot fill... I need a little more time to indulge and wallow in the pleasures and sonic glow of the He6SE, and possibly exorcise the ghost of my OG He-6 out of my system.

Incidentally, I also have a similar sentimental void created by my HeKSE, which I had to sacrifice in order to get the Susvara, and which i have been meaning to get back. Somehow, the He6SE seems to be curing me of the urge to get the hekSE back, and that's a good thing, considering the price-tag of the HeKSE alone. In fact, i'll consider it a great bargain if the 6SE succeeds in driving out the ghosts of both the 6 and the KSE. We'll have to wait and see how long this situation lasts, but so far, I no longer miss either the He-6 or the He-KSE at all... Fingers crossed!

I have all three of the headphones you mentioned in your post. I never owned the original HE6 headphone. I just missed out on them when I first got into headphones. So when they were released as a special edition model, I jumped on them. I sold my HE6se V1’s to upgrade and fund my HEKse purchase, but I really missed their sound. So when the HE6se V2’s were announced with what I considered to be improvements in comfort I pounced again.

The HE6se’s are a tribute to a time when TOTL headphones were reasonably priced. What’s crazy is they still outperform a lot of the headphones today. At their current bargain basement price, I think it’s a no brainer to pickup a pair. The price to performance ratio of the HE6se V2’s is astonishing. Neither the Susvara’s nor the HEKse’s can slam as hard as the HE6se’s. Both are tuned rather differently. The HE6se’s have a different take on music and in that sense this is what makes them unique.

If you keep what the HE6se’s can do in the proper context and not judge them based on the Susvara’s you’ll realize that they do indeed have a place in your collection. You get performance that’s close to today’s top performers at mid-fi pricing, but they destroy anything in the $650 dollar price category.

I like how this thread is kinda just a 1266/Susvara combo thread
This how I feel when it comes to just about any thread these days. :joy:

18 months ago I purchased a pair of Arya's. I still really enjoy these HPs as they are comfortable and fun. At the time it seemed crazy to spend $1500 on a pair of headphones. Today I find myself close to buying a pair of Susvaras. It is odd how a point of view changes over a relatively short period of time.

I know. Funnily I was doing nothing but enjoying the Arya's when suddenly the left driver stopped working. At that time, I decided I should buy the TCs. Since then I've sent the Arya's back to my dealer, who sent them back to HiFiMan, who replaced them. While it was a bummer that the driver stopped working, huge kudos to HiFiMan for their customer service. Anyway, this was when I started down the slippery slope.

I remember when the first broadway show was priced at 100 dollars there was all kinds of teeth grinding and people expressing shock...now 100 bucks is a budget ticket for a hot show...or was when we had shows!

Hello, my name is Orlok and I'm an audiophile addict. It's an addiction I developed only recently but it had been brewing for some years while I grappled with another severe form of addiction with guitars and related guitar gear like tube amps, effects processors, pedals, and even guitar picks. In that world, that addiction is referred to as GAS for Gear/Guitar Acquisition Syndrome. They would refer to photos of guitars and gear as "porn" and say that it's bringing on GAS. We'd see some gorgeous guitar or amp and say, "Man, I've got serious GAS now."

As I got tired of GAS and of playing, in general, as I just don't have the time and am too lazy to practice or learn new stuff to play and get better, I quit the guitar gear addiction but instantly became an audiophile addict. You can see the before-and-after transformation.

My addiction is acutely exacerbated by my passionate interest in virtually every musical genre that exists - from Bach and Wagner to Miles and Metheny, Beatles and Zeppelin to Prince and Lady Gaga, Autechre and Armin van Buuren to Alison Krauss and Wille Nelson, Muddy Waters and B.B. King to Weather Report and Allan Holdsworth, Iron Maiden and Metallica to Meshuggah and Dream Theater, I demand that they all sound their very best as well as authentic and this eclecticism causes a big problem: I will need multiple TOTL headphones that complement each other and have at least two, probably several, amplification systems as well to mix and match properly for each genre and/or artist or the quality of the recordings.

As of now, and probably long into the future, I do not see a way out of this addiction. It will get much worse before I settle down a bit and then it's guaranteed that I will relapse again and probably jump up to the next tier level of addiction and start acquiring gear that are well into the five-figure range. I'm scared but ecstatic so I do understand the severity of this addiction. My business will need to succeed big-time and then I'll need to cash out handsomely when it's sold or I'm utterly screwed...

I'm Orlok and I'm an audiophile addict.

Welcome @Orlok - you seem like someone I'd like to be friends with. All of mine have really crappy gear.
Yes, I need friends who can understand this addiction and be supportive. I don't have anyone around who can even begin to understand what I'm going through.

I want to add that my severe affliction extends to mobile outside of my "opium den" and that I need the fix going through almost all of my waking hours. So I have the following to keep me from having nasty withdrawal reactions.

Being that I'm a nature/outdoors enthusiast who goes on 5-mile hikes daily around the local hills and trails, I have the Audeze LCDi4 to calm my nerves. Great soundstage, imaging and very open sounding for in-ears, excellent clarity and detail with the high-mids and treble being reminiscent of the HD800S, and big and strong bass as one would expect from Audeze. The EQ curve is slightly scooped with a tonality that's quite different from the LCD-3 and LCD-4. Overall, sounds quite gorgeous for being alone with nature.

For the commutes and dealing with the LA traffic, I have the JH Audio Layla CIEM being driven by Chord Mojo. Of course, for safety sake, it's only for freeway commutes through routes I'm very familiar with and for interstate cruises. The Layla is quite different from the LCDi4 - more compact in stage but with a better balanced midrange. Initially, the clarity was not on par with the LCDi4 but I upgraded from the stock cable to the Moon Audio Silver Dragon and, in this case, the improvement was rather dramatic and now surpasses the LCDi4 in some respects. The sound isolation is excellent and I can even enjoy quite nuanced music with great detail while driving.

Overall, the JH Audio IEMs are voiced more for modern pop music (Lady Gaga being a prominent endorsee and user) but I find that the Layla can handle almost anything equally well. The sound is very well balanced from top to bottom and sounds big - not in stage but in the overall presentation. The sound is more dense with a closed-back and "in-your-skull" sound compared to the LCDi4 but still very pleasing all around. This little system makes the commutes and the notorious LA traffic much more bearable. Being stuck in traffic without this would give me serious convulsions.

And here's my trio of pandemic-furloughed devices for business travel (normally, I travel to Asia for 2~3 week trips visiting suppliers three times per year), the gym and for lap swimming: Sony WH-1000XM3 primarily for ANC (not the sound) during the long flights, Sennheiser Momentum TW for weightlifting and racquetball sessions, and a waterproofed iPod shuffle with Underwater Audio ear buds, which actually sound surprisingly good. Swimming with music is another form of euphoric high that needs to be experienced. Without it, I wouldn't swim at all. Lap swimming is an excruciatingly boring activity.

I need a stronger high than the XM3 for the flights (and the occasional hot tub sessions) and I may opt for the Apple APM when I can start traveling again to Asia and around the US. I've been reading the reviews but I really have no idea how potent it is. Reviewers say that it sounds "great", "fantastic", and like "audiophile quality" but then say it's "way too expensive". So I'm totally confused on what kind of high it will deliver but I'm willing to give it a try. The XM3's murky midrange haziness, claustrophobic staging, and the utter lack of imaging (all the instruments sound like they are blended together in some gooey slop) bring on the withdrawal symptoms in a majorly way. I will definitely need something that provides a better fix for the long flights.

As for the occasional 60~90 minute gym usage (when I can start going to the gym again), I'm very satisfied with the potency of the Sennheiser MTW. It gets me through that time slot with no withdrawal symptoms developing at all. The sound is clear and transparent with decent stage and imaging. The lows are surprisingly big and punchy for a Sennheiser. The sound isolation is really good so I feel no need to get the 2nd generation ANC version. It destroys the Air Pods that the rest of the family has and handily beats the Sony WF-1000XM3 ANC ear buds I tried.

Once things return to somewhat normal, I'll be going out and about in a big way - including long RV excursions around the American West and shorter trips to the CA mountains and the deserts. This means I will need to make sure I can continue getting my current dosages in one form or another. For the RV trips, I can take the HMS and TT2 rig along with the TC and LCD-4. I'm investing in a 1000w battery with three AC outlets so I can enjoy my highs outside of the RV while taking in nature. But, for the shorter 2~3 day camping trips, that'll be too bulky and too much of a hassle. The LCDi4 may not be potent enough as I continue to develop a strong tolerance. That means something like the combo of Abyss Diana Phi and Woo WA11 Topaz may be needed for the backpacking trips through the mountains and the woods. I have a feeling that will provide a very strong high when I can't take my main stash of injection peripherals with me.

Mobile is very important. When the pandemic ends, we are all going to be moving about like never before but we'll still need the highs. It's a concern...

I have recognized more and more lately how much of an addiction this has all become. I can not listen to a favorite song without wondering how it would sound on a different source chain or via another set of headphones. Most sessions devolve into an A, B, C, D, E test at some point. Thing is there is no clear winner across all songs, only differences. I love all my babies...:)

Yesterday I sold an older pair of headphones to a younger guy who was looking for his first 'serious' pair. I almost wanted to refuse to sell to him because I could see it in his speech and his eyes. He was catching the bug. I'm like,..."No, go back. Don't do it!". Oh, the money and time saved if only I had taken that advice. Or at least the money could have gone into a different obsession. LOL! I can see I'm in good company here.

The obsession and urges for wanting tryout and hear different components and headphones is real. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve obsessed over wanting to hear my headphones on different headphone amps. For no other reason than to see if it’s better than what I have. It can be maddening sometimes.....
