After taking a closer look at pngwn's avatar picture, the driver looks VERY similar to the AD900 drivers. Well, that should be expected, but the main differences between the two is that the ring's (is it metal or plastic?) shroud covers the cables, and the plastic on the back of the driver seems to cover the magnet. Plus, it looks like they're using the less restrictive black felt material in the center opening. The AD900s use a white felt that is tougher and more restrictive. The magnet is open too. My pro700mk2's also had the same white felt in the center opening of the magnet, but when I cut it out, there was no change in the treble (the smaller holes is where the lower mids - bass come out, and the center hole is where the upper midrange - treble comes out). The same black felt seems to be used in the smaller holes too.

So, the main sonic difference between the AD900 and the AD900x is most likely because the drivers are actually angled this time, and the earpads are thicker. That should help with the soundstaging and bass response, respectively. AT just rose the plastic on the back side of the AD900s (outside the driver), and made it thinner in the front instead of actually angling it. Oddly enough, they don't angle the drivers on the AD1000x/2000x. They do the same thing they did with the AD900s. I wonder why?

Yea. I have no idea why they don't do true angled drivers like with the W5000, W3000ANV, etc. But I do know that the sound is very pleasant. So no real complaints. :D

Totally agree If they found that it was better not angled why bother with it

Can't wait to have the AD2000X

(i don't expect major change but your impressions , and the K702 65 failure (not in sound departement but mine has a little problem of finition ) pulled the trigger to AD2000X sooner than i expected

once you get addicted to AT mids hum ...

I look forward to your actual AD2000 vs AD2000X impressions. I didn't even do a direct comparison when deciding to keep the AD2000X and sell the AD2000. :D I would be happy with either, to be honest.

...oooH ! Just stumbled upon this thread (before it reached an unreadable 100+ pages)

Thanks to Dsnut's recommendation, I'm a happy camper with an AD900X. I'm just wondering why there's hardly any love for the AD1000X ? (seems it's either the 900x or the 2000x here)

AD1000X occupies that middle ground price range between those in the $200-300 range and the ones that are even higher. Probably people decide they'll either settle for something less pricey or go for broke with the best ones.

I heard that AD1000 is only a marginal upgrade over AD900 whereas AD2000 has different sound signatures than the lower tier. Hence, that's maybe why people prefer AD900/ AD900x and 2000

The good news is that the Yen is finally starting to dive back down again (i.e., depreciate against the dollar), so Japanese imports should be somewhat cheaper...!Maybe?

Very true, even over the past 2 or 3 weeks, the final Pricejapan price of the AD2000x with fees and shipping included dropped from $760 to $670 with the same yen price.  This trend could continue a bit more.  Might be a good time to buy depending on when it starts to go back up again.  If the exchange right goes back to 2007 levels I wouldn't be surpised to see the price drop to as low as $500.

Can't believe it took me this long to notice this new lineup! VERY excited they've chosen to overhaul their open lineup.

AD900X looks particularly interesting, coming from an owner and huge fan of multiple AD900s. Wonder what they've done to the sound?

^ At $855 it's likely cheaper to import them directly from Japan anyway for like $600-700. Tenso + Amazon JP, I'm considering doing that.

It costs 44392 Yen on amazon Japan which is equivalent to 493 US dollars at the current exchange rate. It's a heck of a lot cheaper to buy them from Japan. Even with shipping, it should end up around 520$ so it's 60% of the price in the US. Definitely worth it unless you're Donald Trump.

Oh wow, didn't realize retail had dropped that much, I was looking at pricejapan which was about 52,000 yen which with fees and shipping came out to about $670.  That Amazon Japan price might actually be worth setting up a tenso account for.

Hey guys, can some one comment on the comfort difference between the old and new AD models. I auctioned some ad900's before and I hoped the pads were thicker.

Yes, I prefer the new ad900x. The pads are nicer material (found the ad900 a bit irritating) the pads are thicker and the driver no longer touches my ear, which I hated on the ad900.
