Brand new. I've been through about half a dozen ad2000 drivers, and burn-in does not make any perceptible difference. Since I'm used to AT's sound signature on these headphones, I already knew what I was getting (no "brain-in"), and I know that these particular drivers (along with the ad2000 drivers) have a resonance at ~3.8kHz, and some dips on either side of it. To compare, here's a shot of innerfidelity's measurements of the ad2000x:

I find that the raw data is more representative of what you actually hear because I know that ringing at 3.8kHz isn't quieter than the midrange.

I'm kinda interested to see how these headphones compare to the K7XXs now.

AD2000 is a "natural progression" from K70x, some guys around here have said.  In the AD2k appreciation thread, I think.  I really doubt it given people's impressions on this can and that it is regarded as "a speedfreak's wet dream", regardless of whether you believe perceived "speed" is a result of FR or, like me, consider it a result of the attack/release of the headphone, like dialing in less/more attack/release in a synthesizer.

Edit: changed the wording slightly as I just noticed that "K7XX" is an actual headphone, so I can't summarize the K701 family using that.

I see a lot of headfiers put new cushions on their AD series cans since the stock are admittedly bad. I'm going to try to mod focus a pads to fit the AD2kx. Anyone have experience with wedge shaped pads on the AD series? Any pointers on attachment? So far my plan is to cut out the plastic around the focus a and sow a thin piece of leather or some type of elastic around it so I can just slip them on like the stock.

I would like to try the w1000z pads or mod the mdr z7 maybe even for other headphones but don't see them available for sale. W1000z pads look slightly wedged and thicker than past AT pads, they're also leather. The z7 look like the most comfortable pad ever.

AD2000 a Natural Progression for a K701/702 ? huh . Not at all : / .  The mids are very different , much more ticker/meatier on AD2000 , also the treble is darker on AD2000 , subduded by the luxurious mids , also on the bass departement the AD2000 bass have a bit more punch . Soudstage wise , the K70X is much more oriented left/right than AD2000 wich is more rounded .

Can't see the AD2000 or even the AD2000X as an natural progression for a K70X .

I tried out the AD1000x briefly a few months ago and is convinced I need a pair of those ADs.

However going through this thread is introducing so many variables.

The old AD2000 being considered better by a lot of people is giving me even more headaches.

AD1000X, AD2000X and AD2000....

Arghhhhhh!

You can buy any pair of the ad series and then buy different drivers for the headphone. The ad2000 drivers go for I think $110 a pair and the ad2000x go for $150ish a pair. I can only assume the 1000 and lower cost less. Last I checked the ad700 drivers go for like $25 a pair. Would allow you to play around with all the sounds without having to buy multi headphones.

I have now on loan since few days a pair of AD2000X, and I absolutely love them. Several years ago I was a heavy user of the AD2000, it was my first high end headphones. I sold them after buying some T1, then my headphone journey continue with the HD800 that I use exclusively now. But hearing those AD2000X bring to me some kind of nostalgic feeling. They kept the soul of the AD2000 with this very direct contact of the music, very engaging sounding. From memory I think the AD2000 were more colored and had slightly less bass than the AD2000X making the 2000x more allrounder but I still feel this coloration very typical of the AD2000 series. I feel the resolution is better on the X too (from memory). The soundstage might have more deep too, but still this very direct presentation of the music. It's so good to listen to. I might grab a pair for me to compliment my HD800. I missed this ad2000 family sound and this AD2000X is such an amazing headphone.

Hi, need some advice from you guys. I'm actually considering AD900X and HD598. I'll be using it to listen to songs and not gaming.
Assuming I have a amp, which one is a better choice?

The HD598 /600/650's could be considered as Sennheiser's "Smooth" spectrum of headphones. The HD598, has been compared to the AD900X as a more laid back headphone, whereas the AD900X has been reported to be a bit more "exciting" and harder hitting. But as a bonus, the HD598 will be more forgiving on shoddy masterings/recordings.

That being said, the HD598's are not picky with DAC/AMP's as much as the AD900X's, but as far as I can tell it could be very minor.

I found that my W5000 and AD series have the exact same design in cushions. I just ordered an extra pair of W5000 for my AD2000. I found the W5000 cushions works much better and more comfortable than the stock AD2000 ones. I hope it help.

HD598?

Better get the AD900x, bought the HD600 and I am not convinced.

AD900x @ $180  (average price)
DT880   @ $150  (reduced price)
HD600   @ $260  (reduced price)

..

Can't even say the HD600 are marginally superior, and they are better than the HD598.
EDIT: Forgot to mention the AD900x is great value even when HD600 and competitors have sales ..
