I just got ATH M50s (straight cord)

I was wondering if it is better to burn-in my headphones for about 80-100 hrs straight with a burninwave generator.

Or if I Do this for about 16 hrs a day for 30 days and occasionally use them for music.

Is there a difference besides the time?

25-50 hours will yield most of any change that will occur.
It's cumulative, so any time with music playing adds up.

Or... you could just listen to them and they'll change anyway, gradually.

The only break-in rules-of-thumb that matter are 1) a wide variety of styles, and 2) a volume just above normal listening levels.

Congrats, good luck and just enjoy the cans.

I just got the M50 earlier today too. I've noticed that the bass is supple BUT very wild and out of control (not tight at all, boomy here, bumpy there).

Hoping the burning in will tame it down.

Yes...
The break-in process seems to do two very distinct things.
1) The bass lessens slightly and tightens.
2) The highs lessen slightly and become less harsh.

Congrats on your new cans.

Maybe it has something to do with the mechanics of the dynamic diaphragm membrane... fresh out of the box they're stiff and thus overly emphasize the high frequencies and suppress the lows, after loosening through "burning in" aka hours of usage, the flexibility of the diaphragm increases dramatically and is able to play all the frequencies as intended.
