Audio-Technica IM50, IM70 Discussion Thread

When I go out, I do prefer the IM70 to the 846. For one, the IM70 sounds better on the iphone 4 for some reason but doesn't sound as good on my O2 ... there's no cable noise while exercising or walking or eating ... and it isolates just enough for me to be not get run over by cars. The 846 sounds amazing but I do find slight cable noise and isolates way too much to be safe outside for me. Tonally I do find they both have the strong full vocals which are forward and they both do this beautifully and amazingly smooth.

I'm found out that with the stock ear tips, the music sounds much clear, detailed and open. The bass might lack but it's there and tight. The Comply Foam Tips sound is not at clear as stock due to seal and isolation. The bass on the other hand is there and not lacking with the foam tips. Nonetheless with either tips I use, I'm hearing new sounds in old songs that I've never knew was there.

I believe the strongest point of IM50 is how they reproduce vocals, so full and enchanting.

Would this cable work with the IM50?

Or the Exo Series Custom Cable?

I'm gonna chime in as well, I've been holding back on giving my update on the IM70's but alas a few things that really bug me with these very resolving and mature sounding IEM's.

First of all, I am not keen on the fit for these IEM's. I've tried a few different tip's but just stuck with the comply due to best fit and sound. I find that I have waste a minute or two adjusting and readjusting until I find that the sound and fit is right. For comparison the CKM500's are much much simpler to place in your ear!

Secondly, the sound is pristine above the surface but as you dive in to the pond, there is something missing to the music! At times it is clear as daylight and others it's lifeless. I really can't quite say what it's missing (perhaps sparkle) but it at times it is a very clinical sound, very competent, very analytical! (Not a bad thing!) They are much cleaner than the CKM500's!

Lastly, I really do like these IEM's they are fantastic for the price! You get incredible good sound for the price!

But just a few niggles for me giving them 5/5, so as it stands I happily give them a 3.5/5 stars.

Big thanks to the OP for getting me and others on these IEM's, ATH are really progressing I feel; can't wait for newer incarnations in the future!

Special thanks to Rontant for being super cool and welcoming in the thread, hats off to you sir!

Have you tried using Sony Hybrid tips? I'm using them now, and personally I feel they're quite comfortable and offers clear sound.

This might be my first time hearing the IM70 being described as clinical and analytical.

Though I only have the IM50 so I'm unable to confirm this myself.

Rontant mentioned something about music sounding hollow when not getting proper seal with your IEM:

And yeah, the memory wire can be troublesome to adjust.

To work with the IM50, the cable connector specifically has to be in this shape:

Thanks. PlusSound has cables for the IM50 and IM70. I'll go with them.

Also, I'm not happy with the stock tips or foam tips. If I order the Sony Hybrid Tips what can I expect from them with the IM50?

Yer, I did try the Sony hybribs DTS. I wasn't a big fan of the change in sound.

I believe I was getting a thorough enough seal, anyways still a solid IEM!

Stuck with the comply tips DTS! Also the stock rubbers one weren't right neither. I was tempted to get the JVC spiral tips but decided against.
