Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 Discussion Thread

I don't want to frighten you, but the first one I got was cheap, via EBay. It sounded awful and I sent it to a guy called Solderdude who tried to modify it for me. Turned out to have fake drivers inside, so I sent pictures and the name of the company to Audio Technica.

The company reimbursed my money immediately without me even having to return the fakes.

Beware if they are too cheap...

I wrote about them on my own site. I found the picture that Solderdude took of a driver, which turned out to be different from AT pictures. We were all fooled until they were opened up. I'm Rabbit ........

Hi WilliamLeonhart,

Apologies for the delay in reply, unfortunately at the time I was auditioning the MSR 7 NC, I couldn't do much in terms of 'real world' testing as it was a demo unit at a headphone store though it was pretty noisy at the place but too much sound was seeping through.

I will add a good NC headphone I have tried & am sorely tempted to get at some stage is the Sony MDR 1000 X.
Keep in mind the following are personal preference :
it's NC is ridiculously good
Excellent sound reproduction
Specialised functions over the Bose QC series I prefer but once again personal preference (particularly useful is the pause or make whatever you're listening to very soft so you can hear ambient noise by holding your right hand over the right earcup, useful for travelling & the like for announcements)

Riposte & Iancraig10,
The MSR 7 SE is tempting enough but the only physically obvious addition I can see is the hi def cable AT have added though I can't say if anything has been done tuning wise as the specs are exactly the same.
It will be interesting if anyone here can get their hands on one & tell the rest of us but personally I believe unless one doesn't already own an MSR 7, it would be a good choice indeed though the price may be a bit steep.

Hope this helps...

Everyone have a great day !

Exchanged my MSR7 to MDR1000x. Loved it, but Sony is more of a Swiss knife. Probably would`ve kept both if I could, but $150 I sold it for is good amount. Alas, I am not in US, where you can get MDR-1000x for $200 if you are lucky, and 289 if you are not :) Probably because the Sony new model is coming soon at IFA.

I'm more attracted to the sound of MSR7SE because black version is cool too
based on M50x, I'm sure MSR7SE will have different sound, plus this one is combined with 6N-OFC cable and DLC diagphram
But I will try to lowering my expectation

Why there's no black with gold trim ???

Because you mention it, now I'm wonder, because sometimes ATH using with black-gold color on few products
I hope MSR7SE will landed to Indonesia in November or December

thanks a lot for your warning. I was in kind of an auction game, where the only allowed bid step is very small, about 2$. So basically I was the lucky guy happened to have the highest legit bid, while higher bids were not legit due to skipping the small bid step. 125$ isn't that far from 190$ (previously on Amazon US, and currently on Amazon JP), and this auction game was supposed to PR the audio shop, so I guess I'm quite safe :p
I will post some pictures here when I receive it

Well it's hard for me to say. You see the original stock pads are simply too small for my ears period. Or my head - they crush flat with the clamp. I can kind just cram my ears in with a stretch but then the angled drivers are then crushing my lobes very uncomfortably and I can barely wear the MSR7s for even one or two songs. I did like the stock sound but as you might understand I didn't go through my library of tracks to make a definitive comparison.
Anyway the point is that I bought them knowing I would need to pad swap so that's what I did.

The first pad swap I tried was the Brainwavz HM5 angled lambskins. Lost a lot of bass response and felt... so-so. Comfort was very much improved but I wasn't completely happy with the sonic change. I think this was possibly because they were softer than the cowhides but most likely because the 4cm horizontal diameter is a bit tight for my large ears so they weren't being hit with the sound from the drivers evenly After a couple weeks I ordered and tried the ZMF cowhides and basically "wow".

I would describe the difference as being a better bass emphasis and better soundstage with superb all day listening ergonomics if you were so inclined. The brightness doesn't diminish so you still can't crank the volume without melting your head. This is purely my subjective experience of course and I should point out I have a large head and wear my MSR7s at maximum extension - not even enough skull room remains for me to squeeze a pilot pad in. A great deal of the sound you will personally experience is going to be dependant on how your ears fit inside the pads - whether stock or aftermarket.

For me the ZMF cowhides were so good I had to order another set because I'm not taking the first pair off my MSR7s - that's their new home. You could wear the MSR7s with those pads all day if you wanted to.

Edited for typos

Just shame, as it seems, that they come only in black; mine MSR7s are gunmetal, and I love the colour combination... The original pads are good to me; although I wouldn't mind something ZMFs in right colour. Although, they feel a bit pricey for what they are...

Actually I am just between MSR7 and Denon AH-MM400.... hopefully I get a chance to listen to both.

I went that road, gave AH-MM400 a lengthy testing period (well, 2-3 weeks) and couldn't live with them due to the a bit too much bass and dark-ish sound signature.
Bought right away after that the MSR7s for the rebated price, even without prior demoing. They felt right from the very beginning (this was the demo ex, but looked brand new), to me they are far, far ahead of MM400, detail, layering, separation, bass to me is better - never understood opinion voiced in some reviews that they are bass-light, as they are not, imo.
These hit well above their price range.

What struck me with the first listen to the MSR7 after the lengthy period of "negotiating with myself" while listening to the AH-MM400 was how right and how much better they felt immediately.

Was then, and even more with every listening, happy that I made that change and opted for the MSR7, to me, a really good can.

I felt the same when I got my second pair, following the first 'fake' one that I got.

I seriously wonder how many 'fakes' are out there and descriptions based on the wrong headphone. The copies do indeed sound thin, edgy with no bass where the real one does have comparatively more body to its sound.

just wanna share with you guys that I just got a very nice deal with MSR7 for 125$ brand new :D :D it will reach me in 1-2 days. So freaking excited :D :D
Beware of the fake sellers in eBay. I wouldn't take that risk. Unless it's coming from AT direct and selling via eBay.

I just ordered a gun metal at Juno Records for 140£. I am not too worried about it`s high resolution and revealing nature, since I think I have the amps for it. Especially the LD MKIV-SE will probably be a good match, and the LP G109 and Sabaj DA3 will probably also work well.

Hi, sorry for digging this up, but I'm looking for a closed headphone (to block out air con and fan noise) which will ONLY be used for serious FPS gaming (i.e. soundstage is important, positional cues are extremely important, reduced bass is preferred) as I already have Custom Art Harmony 8.2 for music listening. I'm now deciding between A550Z (100$) vs A990Z (194$) vs MSR7 (190$). A1000Z is just too expensive for me (400$) since I just bought the H8.2. I do know that open cans like AD700x is better for fps gaming, but they just can't block the air con and fan noise which will spoil the whole thing. And is it OK to just get the Tascam TH-02 (20$) and swap velour pads in and be done with it? Thanks a lot

Hi, sorry for the late reply.
I haven't used any headphones for gaming lately, but from what I remember you don't want bassy headphones to get the positional info you want. I would rule out the A990Z just because of the added bass, which may sound wobbly at times (unless you like big booms). They're tuned for watching movies. The A550Z I haven't heard. The MSR7 could work, but there might be better options out there. The ART series(=bigger drivers and bigger cups) have huge sound-stage and they sound like open headphones. Try as many as you can, and return the ones you dislike or save up for the A2000Z .

thanks for your reply. I got a nice deal with MSR7 for 125$, but it didn't meet my expectation for isolation. The air con and fan noise still gets in and ruin my gaming experience. I guess in terms of isolation, nothing can surpass Shure IEMs (which I have used ever since I started getting into audiophile stuff) with the exception of Ety 4S and CIEMs.
