Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7 Discussion Thread

Ive had m50's in the past and my impressions of the MSR7's were very similar (just from what I remembered of the m50's)

I compared them directly with the MDR1A's and I found the MSR7's better in my opinion against the Sonys. The MDR1A's had way too much bass for my liking, while the MSR7's were much more clear and defined and of course overall a very neutral set of cans.

I ended up buying the B&O H6's however because the mids and highs for a closed pair of headphones can't compare to much out there for IMO

The A1000Z are probably most similar to the MSR7. A2000Z are somewhat thin sounding, with less bass, seriously sharp but not fatiguing highs. A990Z are a bit colored, V shaped and fun sounding. Overall the soundstage is much bigger with the ART series - they almost feel like open headphones. Headband/Wings are redesigned and similar to the R70x (=super comfortable) and do not feel loose as on the AD1000X. I got the feeling the MSR7 are a bit warmer than A1000Z and still have the edge on the highs accuracy (the A1000Z felt more fatiguing). On the other hand - dat A2000Z highs..., they're something else.
No idea about the woodies.
Hi, sorry for digging this up, but I'm looking for a closed headphone (to block out air con and fan noise) which will ONLY be used for serious FPS gaming (i.e. soundstage is important, positional cues are extremely important, reduced bass is preferred) as I already have Custom Art Harmony 8.2 for music listening. I'm now deciding between A550Z (100$) vs A990Z (194$) vs MSR7 (190$). A1000Z is just too expensive for me (400$) since I just bought the H8.2. I do know that open cans like AD700x is better for fps gaming, but they just can't block the air con and fan noise which will spoil the whole thing. And is it OK to just get the Tascam TH-02 (20$) and swap velour pads in and be done with it? Thanks a lot

Depends mostly on what kind of cable you want, material, what kind of fittings:
RCA, XLR, 3.5mm, male/female;
headphone replacement, interconnect, microphone, tonearm,
copper, purity of copper, silver plated copper, pure silver...

If you're looking for any type of "standard" high quality cable,
I highly recommend Redco Audio in Stamford, CT.

Hi WillianLeonhart,

Sound is pretty much same between MSR 7 & NC version albeit a bit muted but that might be just me & the noise cancelling isn't as good as it could be though once again might be just me but that's my humble opinion.

Hope this helps...

Have a great day !

Msr7 is my fav sounding closed can, my set is dt 1990, bw p7, fostex t50rp, beyer t51p, sr 60, k701, hifiman 350, momentums, qc35.

More balanced than p7s ( p7s have more sparkle but mids recessed )

Wider soundstage than t51rp, open feeling but of course less than my k701. Can be quite near the t50rp but with more depth.

Resolves better details than momentums

Good seperation maybe nearer to my k701 in picking out instruments.

Less lively tho compared to my dt1990 and p7s. It borders more on the analytical but its still musical.

Not my most comfortable phones though, heavy clamp even if i stretched it already, and not super plush like my t51p.

It can work on several genres and plays to my preference amping it with wm1a + pha2a combo.

MSR7SE... *drooling
I hope MSR7SE is better version of MSR7, just like M50x vs M50xMG, my guess is the sounds bit more warm
It's time to have MSR7(SE) again

Thanks for the answer. "Muted" seems to be the case for all NC but can you elaborate more on the NC being not "as good as it could be"? Have you ever tried it on a plane? I've been using my Bose QC15 for flights and things and while they don't completely block out every thing, they certainly helped me sleep better

So many of those favorable points you mentioned are true...
I find it slightly frustrating that I can't wear these headphones
because they are simply too d*mn tight on my "normal" size
head.

In fact, I bought them twice - the second time hoping against hope
that the first set I bought were defective, or something...
but alas, the fit on the second set was identical. Both
went back. Too bad, very nice sounding, reasonably priced
and decent looking headphones.

Maybe on the next go round AT will be listening

Hi WilliamLeonhart,

Apologies for the delay in reply, unfortunately at the time I was auditioning the MSR 7 NC, I couldn't do much in terms of 'real world' testing as it was a demo unit at a headphone store though it was pretty noisy at the place but too much sound was seeping through.

I will add a good NC headphone I have tried & am sorely tempted to get at some stage is the Sony MDR 1000 X.
Keep in mind the following are personal preference :
it's NC is ridiculously good
Excellent sound reproduction
Specialised functions over the Bose QC series I prefer but once again personal preference (particularly useful is the pause or make whatever you're listening to very soft so you can hear ambient noise by holding your right hand over the right earcup, useful for travelling & the like for announcements)

Riposte & Iancraig10,
The MSR 7 SE is tempting enough but the only physically obvious addition I can see is the hi def cable AT have added though I can't say if anything has been done tuning wise as the specs are exactly the same.
It will be interesting if anyone here can get their hands on one & tell the rest of us but personally I believe unless one doesn't already own an MSR 7, it would be a good choice indeed though the price may be a bit steep.

Hope this helps...

Everyone have a great day !
