I am relatively new to this website, and also new to the huge marketplace that is headphones. I know one of you on here can give me a straight and honest opinion between these two choices: ATH M50 or MDR XB700. I love my headphones to have bass, and I recently recieved the Beats tour IEM as a gift. I realize they are way overpriced, but I do like their lower end. I hear that both of these headphones both have great bass, but also good mids, and highs as well. I am trying to keep below a $150 price if I can. any other suggestions that fit my budget are also welcomed. Hope someone can help!

M50 is going to do things better all around than the XB700.

But, if bass is your 1st priority, then I would almost consider the XB500 instead.

Also, are you using them portable? XB has 4ft cord while M50 has 10ft. The M50 also isolates very well.

I will be using them for home and some on the go. Also, are the xb500 better? I guess I'm asking what would be the reason for not getting the next step up with the 700s?

xb500's have more bass. the xb700's have a lot of bass, and they have better sound quality then the xb500's. i like my xb700's a bit more, because i find them more fun. but if i seriously want to listen, i go with my ath-m50s. for on the go, even wiht the long cable, the ath-m50s are better

I wouldn't say they are better ( "better" is not a word we should be using) but I will say they are more fun and more agressive. They are to my ears more fun. The Bass is nice and punchy, meaning you can really feel it when your on a good track. That mid Bass bump in their signature is NICE much like the much more expensive Shure SRH750Dj's of which I'd also suggest. Another good Headphone to look into would be the HD212's they are also popular basshead cans.

if youre a really big basshead then maybe go for something else. by that i mean someone who likes only bass. they are unbelievable headphones though, and really let you appreciate music

If your looking for bass I'd say Shure SRH750DJ's would be much better. You'll probably be disappointed with the M50's bass cause people hype it up like it's some bass monster when it was just they weren't used to closed back headphones. Most people buy AD700's or HD555's and hear about people raving about the M50's and get them as their second headphones and are blown away by the bass that closed back headphones CAN produce.

yeah, the bass of the m50 is not actually that big. it depends on what sound you like. if you like the intense bass sound, that kind of osund you hear in a car thats kind of like doof doof doof then the xb500 or xb700 would be better. the m50 is just a great starting headphones

i have had both.

the m50 is a wonderful headphone with a nice tight bass end

the xb700 is a farty mid bassy earmuff replacement

The XB500 are pretty awesome. I am jamming to them right now with some rock and metal and the bass is pretty solid. This is my first pair of OTE headphones though, so I cannot compare them to any others. Maybe I will snag a pair of the Shure SRH750DJ and see how the bass compares.
