Audio-Technica ATH-L3000 " The Legendary Leatherhead "

awesome thread! REally happy you guys started this, I'm at the point now here I'm not as big a fan of my Modded W1000X as I used to be, seems like these days I like a darker sound, vs the very fun and bright engage of my W1000X, that and the mid bass bump is starting to get to me after having the HE 4s bass for years, still though the W1000X was my first Woodie and one of my favorites for a long time, I'd love to get my hands on a L3000!

Though, how does the L3000 compare to sony newest MDR Z1R? It seems to also be a very bassy flagship
Its interesting indeed id like to know how the two compare too.
Recently AT released another "Leatherhead" that definitely is an omage to the L3000. The L5000

It is tho seem to carry AT's current Closed back tuning, closer to the A2000z and 2000AP than the L3000 it seems.
But if its the leather clad body you all miss, this definitely is almost the exact same to that.
Focal Stellia has nothing on looks to these beauties.

Man...I miss my L3000.

I was lucky enough to find a pair again not too long ago.. still such an incredible listening experience. No other headphone replicates what it does best, at least not that I've encountered.

I sold them to my local headfi buddy @mulveling. Wonder if he will sell them back to me one day. :) I now have the W3000ANV to help my aching soul.

Does anyone know a reputable place/person in the states that can potentially repair or recable the L3000?

Why not DIY? Shipping back and forth alone will cost your $150 with insurance. Moon-Audio can do it. I probably can as wel.

I've never been the DIY type (although very jealous of everyone else that is), but I also think it could be issues with the drivers. I can't tell entirely because when I finagle the cable in a variety of ways, the sounds comes back in fully. So I'm hoping someone that is experienced can take a look and verify and potentially fix. If not, I'm not sure I really have any other options.

Also, appreciate the suggestions (and potential offer). Will look into!

It’s the copper wire fraying away likely at the Y-connector. Very common on old ATs with dual-side cable entries.

I'm hoping so. I didn't have the issue until I accidentally let them play on hi-impedence too loudly for a while after swapping/comparing cans with my amp. I have never made a mistake that boneheaded, just was doing too much at once. Really hoping a cable job can fix it. Fingers crossed.

@Whitigir

Well, there should of been one already. I blame the pandemic, and all the worldwide supply issue.

2021 should of been Audio Technica 60th Anniversary headphone limited edition.
Its a little strange to skip on a important psychological number like number #60.

Knowing AT very well, they might go for #65 instead and hopefully the biggest number #70 in the year 2031.

I will also like to see by 2027, L7000 release date.

Time really flies. I remember the 50th anniversary and it didn't seem that long ago.

I would like to say thank you protoss, love reading your post. They are like little adventure.
How the L3000 compared to the W3000?

Also like to comment on all the people bashing the W5000. They actually sound good. Short fall is the ear pads. I see if I can post picture later on. But with thick lambskin pad. They convert the lifeless W5000 into something unreal. I only got them when I start seeing all the bashing they got almost 10 years ago and thought how bad can they be for such a lovely looking headphones. I got them for a crazy price at the time because the owner said they are the worst headphone he ever heard at above $100 price point. Got them off him for $300 and took a gamble that paid off. I was about to sell them off too until I did the earpad mods.
