Okay,

You all helped me a LOT last night, convincing me to go for the Sennheiser 555s over the Grado SR 60s.

But jilgiljongiljing said I should consider the Audio Technica ATH A700 over the 555s. ($120 v. $99 ?)

I'm not finding a lot of info. on the A700s and there aren't any local stores where I can listen to either one.

Has anyone heard the Senns and the Audio Technicas and can comment on differences and/or preferences?

I know it is not a good reason to pick a pair of headphones, but I find the A700s to be stunningly beautiful, which I cannot say about the 555s.

Mids should be better on the HD555, A700's bass would be recessed compared to the HD555.

A700 should be bassier/ more extension, more bass than the A900 or A500 according to a review I read awhile back on the A700.

The more valid comparison will be HD555 vs AD700, not A700.

Well he was interested in them because of the looks, the AD700 on the other hand, looks like a beehive

The look of A700 is just like A900 or A500, I doubt the OP is basing his choice just on A700's look.

The only reason I mentioned AD700 is because many newb often confuse the AD700(open) with the A700(close). Hopefully the OP will clear this up.

Thank you.

Yes, I was interested in the closed Audio Technica A700.

Part of my question is the difference in sound between the open 555 and the closed A700.

The non-external "leaking" of sound from a closed headphone like the A700 is attractive, as I don't know just how much the 555s actually leak sound?

I would estimate I'd only listen at moderate levels, not rock concert decibels.

Within the year, I'll get a pair of IEMs for more portable use, but still have some concern about sound leaking on the 555s even sitting at home.

Not having an accessible stereo shop with headphones I can actually listen to makes it hard to speculate on the sound as a noobie.

HD555 will leak sound. A person sitting next to you will be able to hear what you are listening to.

A700 is closed, but it doesnt sound nasal and hollow like some closed cans tend to.

Even without considering the open vs closed factor, I found the A700 far superior to the HD555 especially for music. For gaming, maybe the 555 does a little better, but overall, I think A700 is the better buy.
