I agree with dcpoor.

If you don't have a good enough amp to drive K701, than you will be better of with AD700 or other easier to drive 'phones.

You should also consider the AD900's as well. They can do everything the AD700's can do, only better.

I don't find K701 very bad when driving them with my MP3+protable Amps..

I think ad2000 are the easiest to be driven well.

I recently purchased K701 and driving it with RSA XP-7 with PSU.

I am very surprised that it sounds much better (IMO) than my old reference, HD600 + Equinox I was using. Judging from the consensus that K701 and HD650 are in a good comparison, the difference of HD600 and HD650 must be big, too.

Anyway, not only that Audio technica and K701 is in a different league in terms of price range, their sound signature is different. If you like acoustic music, i would recommend K701,

I've had both. The K701 is definitely more accurate and more technically advanced. That doesn't automatically translate into a more enjoyable listening experience, however. I enjoyed the AD700, although the mids are a bit colored and the treble not as clear. The bass is deep but not loud. I think they are a great value at $100 plus a Starbucks coffee.

If u look at the price though...

K701 are never under 250 USD while AD700 are 100 USD... u need to compare K701 with AD900 cause they are same price...

As one who reviewed the AD700s I can tell you that to my ears that while they are good, they are not in the same class as the AKG K701s. The K701s are better balanced, have deeper, more integrated bass (the AD700s are bass lite in comparison), and are more involving. The only place the AD700s win out is in sensitivity. You don't NEED an amp to drive them, whereas you will for the K701s.

No. And as everyone noted, it would be a waste to get a K701 without an amp. I have had both. The AD700 is perfectly fine as an entry level audiophile equipment.

Who the heck claimed that the AD700 are the best headphones? The AD700 are among the best headphones... of its price range. If the K701 which costs around 3 times the price of an AD700 isn't better do you think AKG wouldn't go out of business?

I have both the K701 and the AD900. Amped the K701 is a better headphone but unamped the K701 sounds like a bad AM radio. The AD900 will beat it on comfort, sound stage, and maybe detail but overall it's kind of sterile. The K701 sounds warm compared to the AD900 and the K701 isn't known for warmth.
