191 dvd's at $15 each === $2865

main music system >$100000
3 aux music systems $35000

so thats $94782:$135000

The music collection grows by about 20 disks a month.
Limited strictly by availability.

WOW...

Anyway, I have a measly collection of cds. Something like 20. 20*15=$300. My equipment totals to around $1500. So a 5-1 ratio. Although I am only 16, so I see an emty wallet in my future.

I have approximately 1000cds (1000x15=$15000) and $2500 worth of gear (headphones and speakers). During the last years i have been copying cds and downloading music from the internet but i have started buying cds again this month. I guess my ratio is 2500/15000=1/6.

I probably spend a wee bit too much on music and gear, but especially on gear. Not quite as bad as KG, but close enough. Well over $100k in total. It gets worse when you consider DVDs and the cost of home theater gear. But it's fun and that's what we're here for, isn't it?

My ratio is about .7. I've got about 125 CDs and my audio system total at this point is about $1300. By the end of the summer my ratio will probably be a little over 1, since I'm working in an audio store and get everything for dealer price (yeah, I know it's awesome). I'm looking for a CD player for about $500, mayber a little more if it's really good. What am I looking at? Arcam CD73T, Arcam CD82T, Rega Planet, and Musical Fidelity X-Ray v3. I love this job.

This is an interesting question to contemplate one you ask yourself why you have that ratio. My ratio's about 1:1, but thinking about it makes me question whether to upgrade my system or get some new music instead.

2. Cost/Value = 0: Huge collection with average gear. Used to care about sound quality but now dont care anymore.

Hehe, 1.

I started late in the music game, I've got like 60 CDs although I have like 5k worth of gear (okay, like 2500 audio, non-portable)...o.O (I don't really actually feel like seeing what everything's worth and all that bs)...

My Gear:Music ratio is like 8.33 at the moment if you count my non-home audio specific gear and whatever...or I dunno lol

The value of my music collection far exceed that of my system. In recent months, my purchases of SACDs have driven the value even higher. Closing in on 200 SACDs alone. And I spend $140.00 on one (used) CD alone last month

Working out in USD I would say:-

Value of all equipment approx $50,000
Value of music collection approx $80,000

Let's see, I have 300 cd's, I probably bought around 400-450 in my life total, since I sold a lot of stuff I didn't like. At around $12 a cd, thats as much as $5400, which is definately more than double the amount I invested into my stereo. For my stereo it was around $600 on speakers, $500 on speaker cables and interconnects, $500 on amp restoration including tubes, $200 for sound card, $200 for a hard drive for music, and around $500 for headphones and cable. That adds up to $2500, so about half the cost of the music.

1:2 equipment to music ratio, approximately

I have about 3500 LPs ... let's value them at 15 dollars each
I bought a 100 dollar phono stage, a 350 dollar turntable, a 150 dollar headphone amp, and 170 dollar headphones

So that's $52,500 worth of music..
And 770 dollars worth of equipment

music:equipment ratio

68.12:1

I think we have a winner in the "purist" department, especially if those LP's were acquired one by one (more or less), with your own funds (more or less) and over a long period of time. In other words, it would take tremendous self constraint to continually reinforce the same decision, week after week, for years and years... do I invest another $50 or $100 in music, or do I get better equipment? "It's got to be MUSIC... I just don't have enough yet... need more!"

If, on the other hand, you stumbled into the collection, well that's another matter. Your equipment will some day start to catch up. But it's still really cool no matter how you look at it. I've got at least 10 times that much invested in the racks that hold my equipment... but still don't have anywhere near 3,500 titles!
