I have been wondering what is the ratio of your audio equipment cost to your music collection value. Which of the following are you?
1. Cost/Value = infinite: spent a huge amount of money on audio gear and you like to listen to your favourite 50 cds

2. Cost/Value = 0: Huge collection with average gear. Used to care about sound quality but now dont care anymore.

3. Cost/Value = 0-2: Average

My ratio is way out of proportion. My gear cost a lot more than what my collection is worth.

My ratio is about 1:1.
My CD collection is roughly 500 at this point.

$1500 audio gear
40 cds x 15 = $600. the cd i got are hard to get, more like $20 each.

so i guess its 3 to one. but i have very high expectation on music so i only buy the best albums. so much that i found 2 cds wasnt perfect with my taste and i gave them away.

the rest are mp3 that are either bought online or non american artist.

Probably close to a 1:1. Current headphone system at around say... $2000. Add the mini component stereo and that comes to $2600. I have about 150+ CDs (not sure anymore thanks to my cousins and friends, many cds have "disappeared" over the years.)

But then that doesn't count my previous hi-fi systems that have broken down or sold away. If so, then the ratio gets a bit pathetic... something like 0.4.

Thanks for putting it into perspective....

My audio gear is not that great (still pretty good, if I do say so myself, though, but I would say that I have twice as much invested in Wagner alone. When one starts to add up the whole music collection, small as it is, it's probably 3.5:1 with music beating gear.

I can't even begin to guess. Gathering all my music took half of my life to do, and tons of cash got pumped in over the years. Sum it all up, it's probably 5 times more than what I put into my rigs this past year. Chalk it up to wanting a physical copy of something, even if I get it online and like it - yeah, I'll go buy the CD if I like something i grabbed off iTunes.

Edit - but the ratio is more like 1:1 if you only count the music I have that sounds decent on my current rig. Curse you, Resolution!

I've only got about 50-75 CDs right now. I've probably got about $500 worth of audio gear including a couple pairs of headphones and an amp. I intend to buy more gear and more music, though I have no clue how much music I'll acquire. Gear will probably be kept to $1-2k total as I don't really care to have multiple amps and sources and more than a couple pairs of headphones at any one time.

I'm with Jahn on this one. I've been collecting recordings for more than a quarter century. My ratio's probably close to 10:1 in favor of the music.

4025 cd's at $15 each === $60375
919 sacd's at $18 each === $16542 (some of the import titles are double this)
>1500 lp's at $10 each === $15000
191 dvd's at $15 each === $2865

main music system >$100000
3 aux music systems $35000

so thats $94782:$135000

The music collection grows by about 20 disks a month.
Limited strictly by availability.
