Audeze Penrose X and Penrose

Sorry when I said velour I meant the Dekoni suede pads. The reason I prefer the Wicked Cushions is they just feel more plush against the skin and you can actually feel the cooling gel. The suede I find just feels like i'm lying on my leather couch or on a leather jacket.

I'm no audiophile but I tried wearing the headset for a while with the different pads fitted on each ear and they both sound pretty much the same to me.

do you need to destroy an old Penrose / Mobius pad to apply? i.e. tear-off. Or do they pop out like the video for the hyperX?

@fraidknot Appreciate the reply. I’m going to order some and try them out. How hard were they to install?
Follow The Techne's video and it's pretty easy. I just used a pair of blunt scissors to poke through the big holes at the top of the standard earpads to start lifting them off. From there I was able to peel off the old earpads with my fingers without damaging them. They can be reapplied with a bit of double sided tape if you don't damage them.

The Dekoni pads are made for the Audeze Mobius/Penrose so they have double sided tape and are easy to apply. The Wicked Cushions require you to stretch them over the plastic plates then poke a couple holes with a sharp knife where the tabs hold them onto the headphones.

I recently tried my Penrose X on my Acer Swift 3X and I am getting a very low audio quality and a constant skipping every second, This is while plugged in and in high performance mode.

EDIT: This gets resolved by choosing xbox mode instead of PC on the dongle, looks like a firmware bug on certain laptops ?

@Audeze @KMann @hedfreq Has Audeze just given up on the Penrose? There hasn’t been any news on any software updates in months.

Another firmware update should be coming soon. There isn't an ETA right now and we don't have specific bug fixes or details to share yet. Stay tuned.

It's about the 8 month mark now and I'm still really loving this headset. My wireless connection's been quite solid and they seem to be holding up from a durability standpoint so far. I do get the odd crackle or pop here and there but I can't tell if it's a connection thing, or something related to how the cans render some audio.

Despite the odd quirk, it's to the point now where I can't really fathom using a different gaming headset. My Arctis sits there just collecting dust now because the gulf in audio quality between the two is just way too large to tolerate. As has come up in this thread, I'm sure you can eek out a better audio experience by adding a bunch of wires and gear to your setup, but as an overall package the Penrose does a pretty splendid job of getting the job done.

I am on my 3rd pair. I have to sit about 4 feet away from my PS5 or else the penrose will pop and crackle. Even at 4ft away I still get the occasional pop and crackle. I tried turning off all my Wi-Fi in my house at 3am so it would not distrub the house and it improved my range by a couple of feet. All 3 pairs had the same issue with poor range and popping and crackling. I have the $100 pulse 3D playstation headset which I can walk over my house with and they won't lose connection. I tried a USB extender and had the same results. I still use the penrose every night I just learned how to live with the pops and crackles. Hopefully audeze fixes this issue one day. Audeze has some amazing customer serivce also.

Also does anyone know how to save a preset to the headset. I have to sync the audeze app on my phone to the headset to use the preset I want but is there a way to keep a certain preset as the default.

Does anyone here have both the Penrose and the Sony WH1000XM4 and can tell me how they compare in sound quality?
I have the Penrose and the Bose NC700 if you were considering that as an alternative as well. To me, the Penrose sounds better overall so if that is your ultimate goal I would go with the Penrose and it is usable for travel ect.. But the Bose is my go-to for portability and comfort. The Bose feels significantly lighter on my head than the Penrose and the ANC is a nice feature if you are looking to block out that little extra sound. Penrose for sitting at my computer and playing/games or watching videos and the Bose for listening to audiobooks or travel. If I had to choose just one, it would probably be the Bose, because I have better alternatives for sound quality.

The penrose has a better tuning for gaming. It’s a cleaner more detailed sound. The XM4 is warmer (more bass), which can bleed into the midrange ever so slightly, but it still sounds great for a wireless. The XM4 is more forgiving of bad recordings due to having slightly less detail, so personally I’d pick XM4 for music, and the penrose for gaming.
Also the penrose is nowhere as near as portable.

Still happy on my end, except for the bluetooth issues on my Samsung Galaxy S9 (sound breaking up during calls only, making it impossible to have a conversation, maybe on 80% of the calls) ; i started trying to debug this in hope for workarounds, but unfortunately audeze cannot help me. If anyone is interested, here's how to get some logs/debug out of this android phone; it also allowed me to peek on what's happening and what the headset supports.

1. Disable BT
2. In Developer Settings, enable the “Enable Bluetooth HCI snoop log” switch
3. Turn on Bluetooth, connect to your headset using Bluetooth menu (this is important! Do not allow auto connection!)
4. Wait for a call with the problem
5. Open developer settings, disable the “Enable Bluetooth HCI snoop log” switch
6. Generate bug report (on linux) using $ adb shell dumpsys bluetooth_manager > bluetooth_manager.log && adb bugreport bugreport
7. Extract bugreport.zip and look at FS/data/log/bt/btsnoop_hci.log as well as bluetooth_manager.log

Looking at the btsnoop_hci.log file with wireshark, i can see the penrose is declaring itself with HFP profile and supports 44100 hz (mono or joint stereo) SBC and AAC LC (stereo) codecs (i thought it was SBC only).

Service Search Pattern: Handsfree Audio Gateway
Service: Media Codec - Audio SBC (44100 | Mono JointStereo | block: 4 8 12 16 | subbands: 8 | allocation: Loudness | bitpool: 2..53)
Service: Media Codec - Audio MPEG-2,4 stereo AAC LC 44100 Hz only
Bluetooth HFP Profile +CIND: ("call",(0,1)),("callsetup",(0-3)),("service",(0-1)),("signal",(0-5)),("roam",(0,1)),("battchg",(0-5)),("callheld",(0-2))

In bluetooth_manager.log i can see some in-call info, like the fact that (as i suspected) the device is using the SCO codec at 8 kbps, 16 khz ; so the problem might be related to this codec (which is the voice codec used during calls in handsfree profile). There are apparently some stats too after the call, i might see some retransmission counts (i guess that's the tx_d/m/r numbers).

For me, many of the bluetooth calls start to break up (the caller's voice gets garbled to the point of ununderstandable) when the headphones are still connected using the dongle also. So the only solution I've found has been to yank the dongle off my PC before I start a call.

@Kainy awesome, i'm not alone (same problem) !!!!! Are you also on Android ? I managed to record my own voice on the smartphone when the problem happened, and the recording is fine. Unfortunately i did not find any way to capture the problem itself (android has put many policies in place that prevent it -- at least in my region (i'm too lazy to try flashing another region firmware to unlock the native call recorder).

My workaround is to stop/start bluetooth on my phone before the call, your's is better thanks for the tip i'll try it

Thanks for the feedback.
