Audeze Penrose X and Penrose
Feb 13, 2021 at 5:48 AM Post #5,086 of 7,191
hello

because Audeze not answering questions on earpad availability I'm looking into these. Does anyone have any experience of these and do they really fit the penrose? I don't see the plastic clip on bit in the photo. I'm hoping the suggestion isn't to destroy the earpads that I do have to salvage the plastic bit. If so are there any aftermarket pads for the Mobius/Penros that don't require us to do that.
Thanks for any tips.

You can put a ticket in on their support page. They may ask you to return them which means you will be without headphones for a few weeks but likely they will fix and return or send you a new set if something is broken.
thanks have open a ticket with audeze, guess have to live with my back up headset, i love the sound this penrose produce even with the pops and crackles cause by the connection its not always like that can live with it but im now thinking it might be also the cause with this new problem i have, cause thier was a time i was listening to a music on the loader side then the pops crackles came like crazy with the connected connected.... issue like 5 times in a row and you hear everything distorted while its bugging out
i know clipping can hurt a driver and im thinking it might be

You either have to destroy a set of pads or there is a 3d printable thing on thingiverse. Or forgo the plastic but I think it will affect your sound

I like rtings for their TV side of things (they've really added data I need and no one else would use, like bfi data), but for the headphone side...woof.

Anyone with EARS knows having a flatline near 3-7khz or so would ruin practically any headphone's sound AND your hearing. Rtings would give an ear splitting headphone a 10 because the graph has a straight line. Hello tinnitus to anyone who only pays attention to that.

Also, you can't objectively quantify soundstage and imaging. So their graphs for those make no sense to me, IMHO.

Also a con for the Penrose because it doesn't have a soundstage dsp? Well, WHY would it, when the main use case (current gen consoles), already have their own (Sony Tempest 3D, and Dolby Atmos), so it'd be redundant? 🤦

Sometimes, throwing every Headphone into a measurement blender without some subjectivity and understanding of nuanced use cases, helps no one.

That is pretty much the number one media in gaming hardware so it's quite disappointing that they've lost to their main competitors like Astro and Steelseries. They also confirmed the weird sound on the left ear cup.

I guess these headphones weren't ready for the market and now us early adapters pay for Audeze's R&D. At this point these have just too many downsides considering their price point. There are so many issues that can't be fixed by software and the firmware fixes are quite slow also. I'm sure they will release gen 2 in 2-3 years and it will be a lot better. I just hope they had worked for Mobius support for Series X and PS5 and not rush with The Penrose. Maybe even worked for wireless link for Mobius. Mobius support would have gave them plenty of time to engineer Penrose to its finest.

Now they will have really hard time selling these as internet is full off people discussing different issues and #1 media is telling people that actually these don't even sound so exceptionally good. Even if they are a lot better sounding headset compared to competitors, over 99% of people will not know this.

A new company called VZR was just announced. Only one model called model 1 being realesed in couple months. Looks promising except its wired. One of the main sound guys from Apple started company. Be curious when some comparison videos come out that aren't biased.

Same here! Ordered on November 12th, still waiting. tophifi started to ignore my emails at some point (after moving the delivery date 3 times), so I reached out to Audeze this week. Turns out they don’t work with tophifi directly, instead they deal with Audio Klan, which seems to be tophifi’s parent company. According to Audeze they’ve an order of “several” Penrose X for Audio Klan, but they “will not likely ship them for another 2-3 weeks” (due to lack of stock on Audeze’s end). tophifi replied after all, saying my order will be ready in “10 days” but at this point I don’t believe anything tophifi says.

Kolego,
Moja rada, zamów z Amazona (fr, it, de), gdzie znajdziesz, tam kup.

I'm about one more issue away from returning these. Issues and bugbears with @Audeze and the headset:
  • Swirly wind noise in the left ear cup.
  • Pulsating digital noise in the right ear cup when charging.
  • The headset is getting looser by the day, the ear cups have barely any resistance in them now (I have a small head, I cannot make these any smaller).
  • The Android app doesn't allow me to update the headset.
  • I cannot see the battery level.
  • Chat mix is complicated and why anyone thought it was the best solution having that as the 'press down' option on the dial is beyond me.
  • @Audeze doesn't respond to tickets/this forum/twitter.
  • There's no Mac app.
  • The microphone gain keeps resetting to 0%.
  • When they auto-disconnect it takes about 30 minutes to get them to connect to my Mac again. I have to remember to turn them off if I'm going to be leaving my desk for more than 10 minutes.
  • I cannot name the presets so I need to write down which one does what.
  • I cannot switch preset without finding my Android phone (that I only bought so use with these headphones), charging it and then connecting and switching.
  • The battery life seems shorter than advertised. I usually have to charge them after lunch (about 6 hours).
So for a £300 headphone, they have a lot of issues and annoyances that are piling up. My Sennheiser which I've had for 10+ years now are on their last legs and I don't have a gaming headset to use other than these. The thing that is making me keep them is that they sound so good. But this is a huge snag list that I really hope Audeze is aware of and working on fixing. I've sent my issues to them but not heard back in weeks.

Well today, that latest issue happened. If I ever so slightly move my head or touch the left cup it makes a nice like tin foil is being crunched. No idea what it is, but it's very annoying as it's louder than the sound coming through the headphones. Very disappointed in this from @Audeze which is a shame as they're the best sounding headset I've used. I just hope I can return them.

Question is, do I spin the wheel of luck and try to get a pair that isn't littered with issues or do I get something else recommended in this price range?

If you don't mind using a cable, the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 are fantastic for gaming. Pretty nice for music as well. Just a mention as they're a similar price.

Look up VZR model one.

Well I doubt it will be better than penrose. It has 40mm dynamic drivers compared to Penrose having 100mm planar drivers. I checked the tech specs it doesn’t look like a wow headset.
Well these did look like one but look where your at now. Not the wow you where thinking of. At the very least doesn't look like they add a thin piece of tin foil right before your ear that can get compromised real easy with pressure fluctuations and make a crunch noise. What if they sound 10% worse but none of the issues you've experienced. And this revolutionary 3d thing actually works and makes everything you play come to life. Worth it?

Wired would be my only issue

I use Mobius not Penrose. I’m aware some people are having issues with it. If you wanna experience 3D sound there is no better headset than Mobius with its head tracking and room emulation. Plus same sound quality with Penrose.
