Audeze LCD-4z - Impressions Thread

Do you have a link to the Naim amp you're referring to? Is it transportable? All I found from a google search was the "Naim Uniti Atom headphone edition" but that's a full size option.

Yes. That’s what I’m referring to. It’s not something you’d carry around but easily moved from room to room. You literally plug it in and it’s 245x265mm so not as large as other full sized options. You’ll always get better VFM vs sound quality with a desktop unit.

I’m finally ready to share what I’ve been hearing with the 4z’s. It’s been awhile since I’ve own any Audeze products and the 4z’s are heck of a headphone to re-familiarize myself with their sound.

I started my listening session with the Headamp Gilmore Lite Mk2 and the Burson Swing as the DAC. The experience was good and the combo drove the 4z’s easily. The bass was nice and tight, the midrange was nicely balanced and smooth. The treble had the right amount of clarity and detail to it. While listening to various genres of music with this combo, I couldn’t help but feel like the 4z’s had more to offer.

I moved on to the Hugo 2. Now, we’re talking. The Hugo 2 seemed to be tailor made for the 4z’s. The energy level of the LCD-4z’s took a huge jump. The sound on the 4z’s really opened up and the clarity level increased. The bass became more tactical, the midrange was artifact free and the treble clarity was much better. The 4z’s in a word became more ‘transparent’. This is a combo I could easily live with.

Listening to the 4z’s on the Hugo 2 made the GL Mk2/Swing combo sound a little dull. If anyone wants to know if the 4z’s scale, the answer is yes. Listening to them on the TT2 is similar to how they sound the Hugo 2. Take everything I said about the Hugo 2 experience and move the dial up a couple of notches and add more weight to the sound. It's an incredible listening experience.

I decided to compare the 4z’s to the HEKse’s. They have similar efficiencies, so it’ll be easy to volume match them to see how they perform. Surprisingly, the bass was similar in quality. The 4z’s had slightly more quantity. The 4z’s were also more palpable, while the HEKse’s had better bass definition. The HEkse’s also had a faster bass delivery. The bass drums had more thump with faster decay playing the same notes.

The midrange is where the two headphones start to differ. The 4z’s midrange is thicker, warmer, lusher and very rich sounding. The HEkse’s midrange was cleaner, more detailed and slightly more forward sounding. The 4z’s seem to emphasize the lower midrange more giving it that creamy sound and enjoyable sound. While the HEKse’s had more upper midrange emphasis, giving them a more open and clearer sound. The midrange on both is very detail, but the 4z’s has a more natural sound. Depending on recording, the HEKse’s can sound a little over emphasized there.

The treble is where the biggest differences occur. The HEKse’s is airier and has more vivacity. The 4z’s treble is more laid back, smoother, and natural sounding while still being detailed. It just can’t match the detail retrieval of the HEKse’s in this region. Symbols have more shimmer to them on the HEKse’s. The 4z’s offer similar detail but it’s not as accentuated.

Both headphones have great imaging and instrument placement. The HEKse’s are the more open sounding headphone and offer more of a 3D sound space in comparison to the 4z’s. The 4z’s aren’t closed sounding by any means but going back and forth between the two headphones the difference in soundstage is very noticeable.

What I really liked about the 4z’s, which is an improvement over the LCD-4, is the increase in the presence region of the headphone. I’m finding it gives the 4z’s an increase in dynamics, both micro and macro, and a more transparent sound.

The sound improves even more with a cable swap. When I had the Empyrean’s, I put the Furukawa Silver Plated PCUHD Copper on the 4z’s. The sound improved even more to my ears. Both cables are silver plated copper, but the configuration is different. I also think the Empyrean cable uses 8-wires compared to the 4-wire Audeze cable. With the Furukawa Silver Plated PCUHD Copper 4z’s, The bass tightens up and the treble is a lot cleaner, clearer, more resolving. The mids are more detailed as well. So I ordered a pure silver cable for my 4z’s from Lavricables, which hopes for similar benefits.

Overall, the 4z’s are my favorite Audeze headphone. The upper midrange/lower treble issue I had with the original LCD-4’s seems to have gotten fixed with 4z’s. I'm finding little to fault on them. The little quibble I did have, can be fixed with a silver cable. The 4z’s strike the right balance of warmth and technical ability to make listening to them a joy. I can’t recommend these enough.
Love this review. I am listening to the 4z for the first time today. Thank you, Tim for the demo. I have the 4z plugged into my Cembalo Spring 1 which is being fed 0s and 1s from my TEAC UD-505. Roon is running Max Upsampling into the TEAC and I have the Audeze LCD-4z preset engaged in the Roon DSP engine as well. In the past 4 weeks I have listened to the Susvara, Diana V2, Stellia, Code X3, Heddphone and LCD-4z through my Cembalo. The 4z is by far the best headphone I have heard over the past 4 weeks. The Cembalo is the perfect compliment to this headphone. The only negative is the efficiency of the 4z gives me very little play on the volume pot. The Cembalo is at 8:00 and they are right at my volume limit...

My immediate impression is that the 4z is so much fun. They are warm without being overbearing, clear without being sibilant, detailed, and articulate. The soundstage is incredibly accurate. Instrument placement is perfect. I can hear everything in exactly the right place in exactly the right time. Bob Seger's "Hollywood Nights" sounds so good. Seger's vocals sound gritty, and emotive. Makes the hair stand up on my neck. I will report back more as I get to know them. All I can say at this point, is WOW! Such a fun headphone...

Here are my next impressions after spending the day with the 4z... It is mostly about instrument placement...

They are the first Planar I could see myself giving up the Code X for. Bob Seger's voice is giving me chills. I also like that I can listen to them on the Mainline if I want. But, the Cembalo is the ticket. They are picking up the hiss from the recording. They are so silent and dark they are picking up everything. Backup vocals are so loud and clear. Cymbals are right in the back of my right ear. Bass in the middle, Seger's vocals in the middle. Back-up vocals in the middle above his vocals on the top of my head. Piano coming out of my left ear. Instrument placement is pinpoint!!!! Tonality is wonderful. Bass and guitar sound like you are live sitting in front of the SBD. Soundstage isn't the biggest, but it is pretty amazing in its own right. I simply love being to hear every part of the recording in exactly the right space and time. There are more detailed headphones (Susvara), more resolving headphones (Diana and TC), Bassier headphones (TH900), but none of them are anywhere as close to how musical and fun the 4z are. The are making me seriously consider trading my Code X3 for a pair of 4z. The Code X is the only other Planar that rivals the 4z in the fun category...

Anyone own the latest X 2021 and 4z...?

Which one has hotter treble...am finding the treble a tad too forward in new Xs.

I have brand new 4z (2 months in) and the trebles are perfect for my ears. And I'm particularly sensitive (cant's stand LCD-3 if not equalised for more than 30 mins).

Whatever Audeze did to tweak the LCD-4z's tuning worked. My LCD-4z's sound simply marvelous when driven straight out to of the Dave now. Every frequency is well represented with nice presence and a weighty sound.

Lucky you, I was with them few days ago for extensive listening. The new X have harsher treble and less bass presence than 4Z. Of course, both still in Audeze's house sound though, which is generally have full body and smooth presentation

Hi all... I am now just over a week into my LCD-4z odyssey and it keeps getting better. It has become my favorite headphone. The sound is so lush and complete. The bass is fast and thick without being overdone. Vocals are so good. The treble is not hot at all. Out of my Bottlehead Mainline it sounds just about perfect. Someone earlier in the thread talked about how fun the 4z is to listen to. I echo those sentiments. I am listening to a 2006 Tom Petty show. The recording is a SBD Matrix. For those unfamiliar, it is recorded directly out of the SBD mixed with an A+ quality audience recording. You get the clarity of the SBD and the energy of the audience. It is my favorite show and the 4z makes it even better.

The past week I have felt like I am experiencing all of my music for the first time. What an incredible feeling. I don't own the 4z and I am not sure I can afford to right now. For those who own this headphone, don't ever sell it. It is such a great listen.

That 2006 Tom Petty show, would not happen to be Live In Gainesville would it?

Did any of you move from HFM HEKse to 4Z after a good amount of time with HEKse ?
If yes, why did you stay with 4Z finally ?
