also, what software/media player does the bauer work with?

I haven't tried the last Naive software plug-in yet and since I'm at school right now I'll have to disappoint you for the moment. I'll check it out when I get home this evening.

There are quite a few options for Bauers plug-in amongst a Foobar plug-in. Check here for other options.

just tried the bauer... all i can say is WOW! the foobar crossfeed adds its own colorations and doesnt fill the whole front of the soundstage as well as the bauer. I like it with the default settings already. The volume goes down quite a bit though so some might not think it sounds good because of the abrupt change in volume from no dsp enabled in foobar.

Tried it with the beatles and the sound was very natural with the hard panning. Also trying it with random albums now to see if its worth leaving on all the time

Anyway, after some experimentation with the three default settings with random music, I decided I like Jan Meiers implementation best.

So you might understand I'm quite excited about the new StageDAC. Still undecided whether I should or should not buy it. It won't be released for a while though, so I have some time to think about it still.

I just downloaded the naive software plugin as well. I listened to it for a while and figured I will just keep Bauers one.

i thought the foobar crossfeed was ok until i heard the beatles with the bauer. its real crossfeed while the naive is messy sounding in comparison. the naive sounds like the image still has blobs in between

After listening again today, i reverted to the default bauer setting. I think it gives the most natural frontal soundstage(without any jumps in the imaging) among the three presets. I dont want to mess with the sliders though. I'm leaving it to the experts like Jan Meier and Bauer

I can see where the Meier setting is preferable sometimes too. I think it loses the least amount of punch while still giving the listener a crossfeed sensation although sounding a little more headphony than the default setting.

I think foobar used to come with crossfeed a while back and this naive software was the one it came with. I might be wrong though. People have been calling that one the foobar crossfeed for ages.

milkweg,
What do you think of the naive crossfeed? Also, Definitely try the Bauer

When did foobar start coming with crossfeed? I'm suing v0.9.6.1 and it never came with a crossfeed plugin. Had to install one myself.

I know for certain that the 0.8.3 special edition of Foobar used to come with crossfeed. Not sure which one it was though.

Tried this out just now and there's definitely a difference, which is more apparent with older recordings (I used The Doors' debut) since you can hear the differences in the right and left channels more distinctly.

I don't seem to like it much because aside from the tamed bass, it feels like the sound is "getting a facelift" with the crossfeed. Pardon the description but that's the imagery that comes to mind since the way I perceive it, the soundstage gets tighter and lifted up a bit.

Not using the Naive crossfeed feels much more loose and relaxed, thus less fatiguing.

Try using it with the default setting then move the slider bar up to 15db. Youll get crossfeed for hard panned stuff but coloration is very subtle unlike when it is down at 4.5 db where i feel everything is more congested in the middle. try some channel tests with pure left and right channel, 15db still gives some fill.

For those of you who haven't yet read my first post on this forum about an alternative cross-feed setup, I'll recommend reading it, as it gives a few alternatives to Naive, 4Front and Bauer that are imho even better.

Myself, through all of my upgrades from a good mid-fi setup to the absolutely great sounding system I have now, I still use my Foobar/Dolby Headphone/VI-suite setup, described in post #38 of the above linked thread, for reasons that are also explained there. For the ones that find this just too much of a 'processed' sound, I can recommend the HDPHX VST plugin that is mentioned as well.
