ATTICUS and EIKON, the new dynamic driver headphones from ZMF

Oh yeah - a think someone else inquired about this as well.  If you order the Atticus or Eikon later than your first order - you will be refunded the $150 for ordering both - plus $5 extra shipping charges and keep your place in line.  Sorry again for anyone whose email hasn't been responded to yet, we're cleaning the shop now and I'll get to emails and the order sheet this afternoon.

Hi Zach,,, When you say 'later' , would it need to be added/purchased  prior to the Dec 15th pre-order deadline to qualify for the $150 refund?

Oh yes - good point, yes as long as the order is in before Dec 15th.

Hi Zack,

I ordered the combo with Eikon in Padauk and Atticus in Cherry but I am a little worried how dark the padauk would go. Would it be all brown without red at all? Would be best if you have photos of some aged padauk cups. Thanks

I ordered my two with the woods exactly opposite of you.

It's funny to see this question. I've wondered the same exact thing, since some (not all) of the padauk Omni/Atticus images I've seen seem rather reddish, though it's impossible to tell just from jpgs.*

Unstained, the color of padauk is medium brown/reddish brown; sealed (not stained/colored--just sealed w/varnish or other top coat), it becomes a somewhat darker, more saturated brown/reddish brown. IMO it's a rather subtle and pretty wood with a little character in the grain, but nothing extreme.

Here's a link that shows what I mean: http://www.wood-database.com/african-padauk/

Look for the pictures of "sealed" vs "sanded" midway down. I suspect just a little added color/stain would push this into darker brown/reddish brown in the finished product.

I can't produce pictures to show this, but almost certainly, padauk will age somewhat; most woods do. .

* Admittedly, some of the pictures came from a gentleman who had expressly ordered his padauk Omni's stained darker than usual. So we shouldn't get totally derailed on the dark vs light issue.

Thanks for the info. I love the red look and am hoping they have more of a red than brown look. Either way, I'm a happy guy. :)

I like the Cherry best so picked it for my original Eikon order. I then emailed to add the Atticus and picked Padauk to differentiate them.

Thanks for the info. I am totally new to this wood universe...I guess I want to make sure that there will be some red remaining, instead of all dark brown. Is it going to become something like this?

That wood is really dramatic, striking--but it's not padauk. Can't tell what it is...Burmese blackwood?

Several pages earlier in this thread pad pictures of ZMF padauk:

-- Pg-38 has pictures of the padauk Atticus alongside the new zebrawood Omni.

-- Pg-25 has a picture of the padauk Atticus

-- Pg-24 has a picture of a std color padauk Omni & a number of pictures of the darker stained padauk Omni I mentioned.

Thanks a lot. That is really helpful. I will think more about this...possibly change both to Cherry

It's a funny thing, all this wood stuff. Just like many on this thread, I've spend beaucoup time obsessing over the look & possible sound implications of the multitude of woods available for ZMF Omni's. And when the Atticus & Eikon popped up, that obsession carried over to them, except they have just 2 wood choices, cherry & padauk.

Most of us are at least somewhat familiar with cherry wood. But I suspect most are less familiar w/padauk. So there's a guesswork & questioning here re padauk: Is it worth the cost to upgrade? How will it change the sound? Is it too red? Too brown? Will it get darker? (and so on)

Maybe it's time for a note-of-reality: imagine you'd never heard of ZMF or any of these headphones. Then all of sudden you encounter an Omni, Atticus, or Eikon made of padauk (even just a picture). What would you think?

As for me...it would knock me flat on my ass. It's incredibly beautiful (all 3). A padauk headphone...wake me up, I'm dreaming!

Just had a few simple questions while I'm patiently waiting on my Eikon!

1. I believe you mentioned, Zach, that the little metal gimbal piece on the Atticus and Eikon will actually be black and charcoal rather than the silver we have seen pictures of so far? I do think those will look better, especially with padauk. I just wanted confirmation that metal swivel on my Eikon will actually be charcoal instead of silver.

2. The cable connections to the headphone are the same as used in the Audeze LCD series, correct?

3. And is the stock cable that comes with the Atticus and Eikon the same cable that comes with the Omni? Thanks.

What do you guys use as a benchmark to gauge soundstage and imaging? I personally, use Battlefield 4 in Stereo configuration and sound profile in Hi-Fi mode, it's very dynamic and you can almost pinpoint gunshots withing 5 meters of margin of error at different distances. I know most of you probably only listen to music, but if you want I can hook ya'll up with some recorded gameplay to test your headphones out. I was just done playing a round of Battlefield 4 and the eargasm overload is quite different from music listening on my ZMF Omni Blackwood.

No problem!

1.  It's going to be Black for the Atticus and Matte Black/Charcoal on the Eikon and then the models will be differentiated by branding on the leather parts.  I haven't done nay in silver so far, maybe it's the lighting in the pictures that makes them look silver?

2.  Yes same as Audeze LCD series, both will work!  Though, we do use only the 1 and 3 pins like most boutique cable MFR.

3.  I am not sure on this yet, I am working on trying to figure out what cable these will ship with, as soon as I know I will update!
