Is this guy particularly a specialist with leather retrofits? I hope he can do velvet as well since that is a big draw for me. I'm not a big fan of leather around my ears.

Yes, if he can't do the pads like the originals then I am not really interested.

Jeremy has the original parts (that I sent) with him now.
Let's wait for his conclusions on the velvet matter. I will keep you all informed.

If takers for this very worthwhile venture stall out and you want to fill out the rest of the minimum order, you should contact some of our sponsors like Tyll, Todd or Jan Meier. Someone like Headroom should be interested in stocking some for non Headfi members who have HE90's. There's probably a pretty large percentage of HE90 owners who aren't interested in being part of an online forum like this but would realize that there are good sources for headphone related items from their ads in the audio press.

I'd think that these sponsors would like to have an exclusive item like this that would bring customers "in the door".

I'm going to break the rules a bit and just say that velour should be no problem.

Thanks a lot, Jeremy! That's great news for all of us!

I've thought about this before and it's indeed a very good idea.
I don't think we will be able to reach even 30 sets. Almost every HE90 owner in Head-Fi is already in the list.

I have been talking to headroom regarding my other things and it seems like they may be interested. So, you could contact them and ask about the HE90s and see how that goes...

Darn plastic piece inside the earpads..............

Did you rip it apart to see how exactly the plastic is in shape?

Not yet because I'm unsure as to if you can get enough people in on it. I don't want to wreck the pads yet unless I'm sure that it is a go. However, I can feel it, and it must be made by a third party or something. Probably would have to be CNC'd because it is a precision part.

Jeremy and others in the thread...

Can you please post a pic of these ear pads? I was given a set of round earpads with vinyl on them and told they were Senn pads but they looked an awful lot like Beyer pads to me. Mine have a plastic ring in them that I pulled out so I could try the ear pad on an adapter for a ortho project. The ID of this ring is 82mm, OD is 94mm. It's a right angle flange Jeremy and would be very, very easy to have it milled out of fiber-reinforced Nylon-6 through your connections. One ring is mint, the other had a "bite" taken out of it about the size of what a thumb would break off if pushed too hard on the thin part of the flange that mounts to the headphone cup. Guess how I know it's the size of a thumb...

My only concern is that these pads were for the HE60s, not HE90s, but I'm very glad to finally have some info to figure out where these pads actually came from, but I can't believe Senn used such a crappy, cheap pad on a high end can.

So, I don't own either can, but I'll help Jeremy out anyway I can and send him my rings if any of you HE90 owners can measure your ID of this ring on your pads and let Jeremy know if it's the same or the smaller ring.

Hey guys, one other comment from a H-F'er DIY'er who has probably swapped more pads on orthos than many would think is possible...

Velvet, velour and suede are great for comfort, but if you value the bass from your HE60 and HE90s, then be prepared to be disappointed. The seal of the ear pads against the ear or head has a larger effect on the sound than any other change except the amp itself.

Velvet or velour will be tight against the head or ear, but they're porous and the bass will be reduced, perhaps to the point of being non-existent in the bottom two octaves.

Not trying to come off like a jerk, just trying to prevent disappointment in a $100 plus set of aftermaket pads if you ordered velvet and thought they would sound the same as the old vinyl pads.

The velour should have no effect on the baffle seal of the HE90 since it's only where the pads come into contact with the head, the rest is all leather. Now if the sides were velour as well then there would be no bass at all. I'd also strongly caution against changing the dimensions of the original pads in any way, especially the height since they are like that for a reason.
