Another thing to note is mine is carved in the shape of a half retangle and in the link mentioned above it is carved in the shape of a half circle. Not all are visible until you really put closer inspection with a light source. I don't think you should be worrying too much about it. They are there for functional reasons.

Yeah mines a rectangle also. Not really worried about it, just wanted to check if I was the only one. Fortunately not.. haha

i believe that those holes are actually supposed to be there. it seems as they are part of what makes w1000x sound so open - they let air go through unlike "truly closed-type headphones"

Actually they are grooves for the screws

wow. i didn't expect w1000x wooden cups to be so thick!
but.. the holes on my headphones seem round-edged. the ones on the picture are square-holes

my holes look exactly like here. i wouldn't name those as "square holes"

also, because of the way it looks (like on this pic) i thought that that wood is about 2mm thick.

i read that original w5000 (leather) pads are of the same size
but they cost around $100 + shipping :frowning2:

Received my pair today and am enjoying them so far. Nice, forward sound that I like with just the perfect amount of bass. Does the sound change a lot after burn in?

i've actually found out that stock earpads of W1000X hurt my ears (on their top)
can anyone recommend earpads that would sit a little tighter to the head?

The top of your ear should slide in just behind the thick earpad. The earpad should not press on top of your ear. But if you really have large ears then the circular earpads found on the W-series can be troublesome.

The L3000 pads are also around occasionally; they're cheaper and higher quality than the W5000 ones so I've been told. My W1000X sounded better after my pads got a little flatter, and I've heard that the W5000 pads are a little thinner to begin with... I need to get a pair of either at some point down the line. I do use the W1000X an awful lot, I assume at some point the vinyl pads will break apart.

so changing the pad with L3000 or W5000's pad can improve the mid-section of W1000x ? (less recessed perhaps?)

No, I don't feel W1000x is that recessed till toward at negative side, but I just used to Grado and ATH AD-Series which is have quite forward midrange :)

Sound wise, I think, when ATH produce W1000x, they want to make it becomes the complement of W1000, not the successor.
