ATH M50 Expectations?
Oct 26, 2010 at 8:58 AM Post #242 of 370
I have had my M50s for a few weeks now and i must admit, there isn't as much low end 'thump' as i thought there would be. I'm not interested in just a bassy set of headphones as i listen to a wide range of music but i do like my bass in dance music. As a spur of the moment thing i bought and am now awaiting a Practical Devices XM4 amp which i got in the for sale forum. How do you guys think this will fare? Will it improve the sound much?

Thanks for your help.

People just don't get the meaning of EQ-ing the M50s to have a hint more bass. The M50s aren't super bassy in stock form. However with just some emphasis on bass, you can see just how low they can go without distortion. The M50s can handle some massive bass. How is this any different from buying a headphone already eq-ed for a crapton of bass? I fail to see the difference. As long as you get the bass you want without destroying the rest of the spectrum, who cares?

Weird, i always felt that my M50's were significantly better than the XB700's whose muddy bass used to drive me insane. The mids of the XB700 were pretty bad and metal sounded pretty pathetic IMO.

You know... I see the term 'overrated' used a lot by folks. I think that's an unfair assessment of the general praise for these cans. They are not perfect, nor are they the best. But overrated really needs to be used for things that are unduly praised (I think Bose or Skullkandy). These cans are great, and are given praise accordingly.

They are not neutral and in that way I agree that they may not be the best for 'critical listening' (which is why I have my DT880's).

As most of what is written here is just a matter of opinion and personal taste (not to mention differences in hearing, etc.), I could not argue that the xb700 destroys the M50... for you.

I thought they were pretty decent when I had them. It seemed like a good buy at the going price of around $100

Sorry, but the XBs are less detailed and resolving to my ears.  I know you have issues w/ the slight upper mid recess for violins and vocals but the M50 is better to my ears in every other way.  Just offering a counterpoint.  Plus I can flick a switch on my arrow to get that ridiculous XB bass and it'll sound tighter and more impacful while no switch will be able to turn off that mud and bloat in the XB.

Assuming it's a reputable seller... it's a splendid price.
