Astell & Kern SR25: The next A&norma player

Apr 22, 2021 at 8:57 AM Post #1,696 of 2,811
Astell&Kern has identified the issues users are having with the embedded Tidal app. Tidal has changed the authentication method used when logging into third-party Tidal apps. Astell&Kern is working as quickly as possible to make the required changes in the embedded app.

New firmware updates for the SP2000, SP1000, SP1000M, SE200, SE100, SR25 and KANN ALPHA will be released in May 2021, which will contain an updated embedded Tidal app to fix the authentication issues.

There is an issue with the new Tidal authentication policies on the following players – KANN CUBE, SA700, SR15, CT15 and CT10. We are looking into ways to continue to support the Tidal app on these players. More information will be available in May 2021.

Tidal is dropping support for older model Android devices. Unfortunately this means Tidal can no longer be supported on the following players due to the new authentication requirements - AK380, AK320, AK300, KANN, AK70 MKII, AK70, AK240, AK120II, AK100II.

Thx for the update Jason, although not much for streaming myself it remains useful for music discovery. Unfortunately I guess the streaming providers are far more focused on the smartphone market, hence Tidal not bothering to advise A&K in advance of the change in protocol.

To clarify, does this mean both the embedded and side-loaded Tidal apps won't work on those models?

Those model players do not support OpenApp, therefore the Tidal Android APK was not available for those models.

Could be sooner. May start rolling out as early as next week for some players. Dev team needs to update 7 different players. If we had been told by Tidal before the change, the work would have already been done or close to done.

Poor practise by Tidal IMO, costs them nothing to advise all of the changes. Think A&K have reacted well given they were in the blind...

It was probably inevitable with all the financial hardships these guys (like Tidal) have had over the past year. I imagine Tidal had to let go of whomever would be maintaining legacy support like this...or the bean-counters just determined the benefits didn't outweight the cost anymore.

Doing the best you can with the cards you were dealt. Honestly, I'm just grateful you're here and keeping us up to date like this.

All Tidal had to do was send an email broadcast regarding any update, they chose not to, plain and simple...

Personally I've been on the fence with Tidal for some time, this has helped me to look elsewhere for a streaming service as the end user is clearly not their priority.

I'm far from a staunch defender of Tidal; really, I only use them as a basis of comparison when reviewing in-ears. I much prefer Qobuz or my local library when it's available. They've made some really weird business decisions in the past as well; cutting off a chunk of their developer support without warning wasn't a good call any way you slice it.

Interesting how everyone bashes Tidal and assumes that the change to oauth wasn't communicated to their partners. :sunglasses:

I don't bash Tidal, but I'm willing to call them out for their errors. A&K wasn't a small company and we have a rep here saying even they were caught off guard by the change in operations, so yes...they deserve some ire here.

In this case they clearly did not, or are you suggesting A&K is publicly lying of which they would be accountable for. Given many other DAP providers have the same issue, my money is on Tidal's lack of communication plain and simple...

More Tidal fun & games

I'll spend my money elsewhere

I have no idea, of course. Obviously someone dropped the ball on the changes. FYI, Tidal has an entire web site dedicated to their Partner API (developer.tidal.com). I suspect the complete answer is complicated and finger pointing doesn't really help.

If you had no idea, why run to their defense? They're certainly not under attack, unless you consider our discussion of issues that directly apply to the subject of this thread is somehow damaging information.

Tidal does have an entire website dedicated to development. Have you tried to use it? Because I just tried. Brick. Wall. No mention of discontinuing legacy API support that I could find. The answer can be really simple if you start to think of them like a business and less like some benevolent provider of the privilege to listen to their music; it's really a matter of numbers.
