Astell & Kern SE100: A&futura Impressions - Reviews

Well it charged fully in two hours with new plug. I'm playing music until it gets down to low power before charging it again. How long should it play before it runs low on power?

Appealing to my fellow SE100 owners and @JasonNYC :

Upgraded from 1.02 to 1.11 today and my externally created playlists no longer work. I'm using the internal storage, not a SD card.

Before, at the top level of the storage directory I could just have my .m3u playlist files. In them, the track file names would be prefixed by "Music/" (naturally, all my music is in the device "Music" folder). Now it seems the player ignores the playlist files outright, even if you put them in the device "Playlists" folder.

I noticed playlists created on the device have track prefixes of "/storage/emulated/0/Music/". I tried copying this format to my own playlist files but that doesn't seem to work either.

This is slightly annoying, as I'd rather just export playlists from my computer and have them just work on the SE100 rather than recreate them again on the device.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Unknown to me, our development team changed the way playlists are handled with the latest firmware.

Due to the way some streaming music apps handle playlists built into the app, they needed to change playlist properties on the player. Previously, you could create a playlist and save it in any folder. Starting with firmware 1.10, you can only save playlists in the playlist folder in internal memory.

Here is the official info from our development team:

Notice: Playlist file operation method change.

Affects AK users who use SP1000(M), SE100 and SR15 and Open App firmware.

There was change of Playlist file (*.m3u) operation method when using the new F/W which supports openAPK.

Before F/W update, Playlist files (*.m3u) can be recognized when saved in any folder.

After the v1.10 update, Playlist files can be only recognized when they are located in the “Playlist" folder in the root folder.

This change is because :
- when using the Open App service, some application creates playlist file(*.m3u) themselves.
- In this case, AK system recognize this *.m3u file created by an app as an AK original Playlist.
- Such Playlists cannot be played by the AK player and it can cause confusion with originally created playlists.
- To prevent this issue, we changed the operation method of playlist files so that only playlists in the “Playlist” folder can be recognized.

Thank you.

Just an FYI, there have been a number of streaming app updates for Android in the last 24 hours. These will need to be downloaded and manually updated on AK players.

Current Versions:
Tidal – v. 2.9.7
SiriusXM – 5.2.5
Qobuz – v. 5.0.2
Pandora – v. 1810.2

Amazon Music was updated on 10/24/18. Current version is 15.17.2

@Kenneth Galang Still waiting for more info on playlist limits and why there is a discrepancy among people on how many songs they can add. Will get back to you as soon as I know more.

@JasonNYC, can you comment on what A&K recommends with regard to battery optimization and whether running it down completely is recommended to prolong the battery life? Always a bit different depending on devices, and definitely want to take the optimal path with the SE100?

As per recommended standards by the battery manufacturers, Li-ion batteries SHOULD NOT be fully run down consistantly as that will decrease battery life. It was older battery technologies that had "memory effects" and needed to be discharged completely before being recharged.

We follow the battery manufacturers recommendations as follows:

You should try to perform shallow discharges — discharge the battery to something like 40-70% before recharging it, for example. Try to never let your battery go below 20% except in rare circumstances.

Battery manufacturers recommend you perform a full discharge about once per month to help calibrate the device’s battery time estimate.

Since loading the latest firmware, I'm getting the occasional stutter in playback (onboard music files, not streaming). I don't get it a lot, but it's pretty annoying.

Is anyone else getting this, or is it just me?

I'd like a smaller unit, so I'm upgrading to a 1000m. Watch for the sale ad.
